Royal Purple Raceway - 25 May 2012 (Video)

What a night! Danny and Tom (70Wcars and sicky olds) drove all the way to Houston from San Antonio! Man, you guys are awesome! I had a blast!

So after a long anticipated return to the track, we figured out our fuel issue and are running on all 8 cylinders thanks to Harland Sharp. The car performed well and gave us a direction for furthered improvement...suspension!!!

After 2 consecutive 12.2- passes we let the cars cool down for a bit and I pulled a 12.11 @ 112.55 mph. Unfortunately, I forgot to record the first two runs on the Go-Pro so all you get is the last video, which happens to be the best one anyway lol! Enjoy!

I am stoked, I can't wait to get either the QA1 coil over set up or the Moroso trick springs w/ 90/10 shocks. That should get us into the 11's, then we'll change the 3.42 out for a 3.90 and see what we get. New (lighter) wheels and tires should help some too...

The best part of it is, my wife wants to see the car go faster more than I do so funding shouldn't be a problem And she had a blast thanks to Sicky and his girlfriend so apparently she is already planning a trip to San Antonio (River City Raceway)...I guess if she twists my arm I'll go

As said to my Nephew, [492 '69 - no pass yet] better do the math!
Last thing you want to do is overrev an Olds!!
RPM's through the traps??
He has a 3:55 12-bolt.

I was barely hitting 5000 at the traps...if you watch the video you can see the shift lift almost kick on well after the traps & it was set at 5300. I think we'll be ok with 3.90 gears...the rev limiter is set at 6000.

I'm using the 8.5 Corporate rear end with 3.42 gears. I'll swap over to some Moser axles and a detroit locker when I change the gears out.

This is awsome Steve! I like the 12.11 pass! It was so hot and humid on those runs. If it was cooler and less humid you would have had an 11 second run. But we have the Houston heat and humidity to contend with.

Next, a gear change, and the front suspension as we spoke about and you will see some solid 11 second runs!

I had a blast...especially when the " drunk " walked up to my car and stared at the 442 on the fender then said " those numbers mean something...right??!! "...lmao.

Your car is sweeet Steve..we will get some 11's for you. Pleased with how my hot rod handled the humidity. If you can post it I would love to the the vid of my last pass..

The dude in the middle in the pic does NOT have a Mil Spec hair cut...lol

Good to see it running good and you all having fun.

Those GoPro cameras are cool. Wish I knew about them before I bought my Sony HDR CX-160 recently. I could of bought two GoPro's and be shooting 3d video's, the only drawback is you have to wear red/blue 3d glasses instead of the tinted ones you wear to watch real 3d video. It also can take time lap video which is cool too. And I like that water tight case you can put it in for under water videos too.

Look at me, I'm rambling on about your camera instead of your car.

Great video.

Where did you get that guage that tells you when to shift and how many rpms did you have it at?

Hey Faz it's a Shift Light. Look in Jegs or Summit. I think Steve had his set at 5300...mine at 6500 in the 10 sec car and 7100 in the 9 sec. ride. Higher rpm builds including better flowing Heads and Intakes, bigger Carbs and Cams and of course a VERY light weight rotating assembly and modified/reinforced bottom ends in those two cars.

Faz, as Danny said its a shift light. The one I have is an Autometer digital RPM shift light. It tells you the rpm like a tachometer and is programmable for custom shift points. The one I have sets a single point but you can get them for up to 3 separate shift points.

It also has a peak rpm recall feature that let's you see what the highest rpm was on the run. They start at $150 and go up from there.

I'm down for a trip to Sealy...let me get my front suspension finished and we'll be there. I think I'm gonna go ahead and spring for the QA1 setup, I just like the idea of having such an adjustable setup.

Steve, A set of 90/10 up front and a set of 50/50 shocks in the rear. Change the big sway bar you have up front. Good alignment, and some good tires upfront,

Quest for the 11's

Great to see you back on track Pilot, great footage. Your 112mph is exact same as my Olds and as my best time is 11.83 you should have no probs getting into the 11's soon. Just for comparison i also still use a 10 bolt with 3.73 gears, detroit locker and mark williams 30 spline axles. I would recommend a 3.73 gear as opposed to one in the 3.9s as you may find it a bit much for highway driving and with our torque you dont need that much gear. I shift at 5300 where my peak hp is. Dont know what converter you got but i use a 10 inch with 3000 stall. My best 60ft is 1.53 with stock front suspension but am fitting some moroso trick springs soon, pn 47160, but adjustable shocks sounds a better idea i just went for the cheap option. Good luck next time out, i raced recently but could not get grip out of M/T drag radials with Nitrous on a poor track. Oh well will try again at the better track, Santa Pod, in July and hope it hooks with the new springs otherwise its back to slicks to try and beat my pb on Nos 10.73@125mph, cheers, Paul, U.K.
