Manifold height- ram air hood fitment

I was wondering about people experience fitting after market intakes under the 70-72 ram air hoods. My O2

455- victor fits under 2 inch raised ram air hood
350- victor fits under 66 442 stock hood with small block engine mounts.
Edelbrock torker fits under stock ram air hood 1970 with modified air cleaner- stock BBO motor mounts
edelbrock 04B fits with stock ram air hood and air cleaner.

Does anyone have a measurement on the available intake manifolds- has anyone tried a edelbrock air gap under the stock ram air hoods?

455 intake manifold carb pad height, inches:
  • W-30, 3.30
  • Edelbrock Performer, 4.95
  • Edelbrock Torker, 5.05
  • Edelbrock RPM Air Gap, 5.54
  • Edelbrock Victor, 8.20
If you put an RPM Air Gap with Q-Jet under a stock OAI hood, the only way you can fit this is to use an air cleaner adapter from a Cowl Induction Chevelle. That will put the mounting flange for the sealing foam only 0.25" higher than stock. That should fit OK.

Awesome wagon!

No wonder you know about 2" raised OAI hoods.

Glasstek is local to me. They love cash and give discounts for cash paying customers bought all my glass stuff from them and its top notch . Alaska442 that vista is kick @$$ love it. love the patina.

My 350 with a holley street dominator intake with a welded on spacer milled to turn it from spreadbore to square bore then a super sucker spacer I have 2.5 inches of space. I have the regular ram air hood from glasstek. that's a pizza pan, HVAC foam and a cooking strainer for my ram air set up. It works lol.

I know this is an old thread but this is what I’m trying to accomplish before I put my motor together.
I’m not sure what your talking about with the chevelle air cleaner adapter?
I have a 70 cutlass with a factory oai hood and a 455 with edlebrock heads and air gap rpm intake. The engine is currently un assembled so I can’t test it.
so your saying my hood should still shut with that intake, and I can possibly use the factory oai air cleaner?
thanks for your help.

This reply assumes you are using a Quadrajet carb.

No parts of the OAI adapter will work with the equipment you referenced. The OAI adapter is about 2 1/2" too tall to fit under your hood.

The Chevelle adapter is shorter than the OAI adapter and will allow your hood to close. You would put this on your existing air cleaner base and glue the W-30 foam to this adapter.

For an example of the Chevelle adapter, look up part number PZ00400 on OPGI.com. Other sites may have it for a lower cost. You may also find it used.

Ok that makes more sense.
im planning on using a holley instead of a quarajet. Have you had any issues the factory base and a holley as far as height?

I'm not familiar enough with Holley to give you advice.

However, you can figure this out with a little measuring...
  • The height of a Quadrajet from base to air cleaner flange is 3.277"
  • Measure your Holley to get an equivalent measurement
If the Holley is the same height, as I suspect, my stackup calculation will be fine.

Sounds like a good project. Post some pictures when you're done.

i had to cut a hole in my hood on my 66 to run a street dominator on a small block with “1 carb spacer and extreme velocity carb hat that had a 1” spacer welded to it. I ran a fox body mustang scoop backwards on my stock hood.
