This is wild.....my question is....hoooow...did that mini mill hold the deck square....lol. I mean, really... I guess I just had a clapped out B-port but I was getting .002"crowning in the last inch or so on a set of iron Ford heads. I got a bigger mill now but that's impressive.

I know. I was surprised how true I was able to get them, and I've had no issues with mls gaskets either. It's a fairly nice mill from Precision Matthews but is definitely undersized and this is not recommended. However, I have had success with 3 sets of iron heads now and I even made fixtures and did some Pontiac 400 heads that have several thousand miles, and some drag strip passes on them now and seem to be working just fine.

Great build and thanks for sharing all the details, pics, and video! Would you mind sharing your rear wheel and tire size and brand? Just curious with the 2004R and 4.10 gears. Are you running a 28" rear tire? Is it a slick or drag radial? I assume you cross the traps in 3rd gear at 107mph - any idea what the RPM is at that point?

Thanks!

Its a 275/60r15 Nitto Drag Radial so right about 28"

Math says that the turbine shaft of the trans should be 5266 rpm at 107 mph with 28" tires and 4.10 gears so with converter slip it's probably closer to 5500 or 5600 rpm. I have to admit I have not stared at the tach at that speed since the car gets pretty floaty up there.

Hi, sorry another random question for you if you don't mind sharing. Are you manually shifting your 2004R or leaving it in 3rd and letting it shift automatically? I know Dr. Dan (a member here and on this thread above) had mentioned he leaves his 2004R in 3rd. I've been doing some testing with my 70 Supreme using a Dragy for 0 to 60 times and so far letting it shift automatically is giving me the best results by 2 tenths. Curious if it's the same for you.

I don't mind at all, I let the transmission shift automatically. I tried manually shifting before but with a column shifter, it's too slow and inaccurate. I did change the TV limit spring and machine some material off the secondary governor weight until I got it to shift where I wanted though which took a few iterations.

I made a block that fit in the governor weight so I could hold it in the vise and then machined at least 0.150 off the top all said and done. I also removed the spring on that weight.

Thanks again for the details. I know getting the governor dialed in is challenging. Lonnie at Extreme Automatics did mine years ago but it took several tries. It shifts around 5700 - 6000 ish now at WOT (a little different for each gear) but I've got my stock console shifter with a custom detent plate that makes it like a ratchet shifter so it locks into each gear both upshifting and downshifting. I thought manually shifting using my shift light for more accuracy would be faster but so far that's not the case. I also added the same 275/60/15 Nitto RIIs on some 15x10s and they are really hooking well. I'll keep doing more testing but maybe letting it shift through the gears automatically is just faster. Appreciate the info!
