Factory cast iron intake manifolds

Has anyone ever tested the factory BBO intake manifolds for a performance difference between them in stock form?

Not that I know of. It would be interesting to see if there's a difference in the power curve between a 442 intake and a Toronado intake? Good post.

All factory BBO intake manifolds that were in production.

For example 67 425 intake to 68/69 intake

70 W 30 aluminum to early cast iron intakes.

69 Hurst intake against others.

I would think the intakes from 65 to 72 would be the best that Oldsmobile produced from a HP/TQ view point.

You'd have to be a glutton for punishment. $400 for a dyno day, lugging in 800 lb of cast iron intakes and swapping them while trying to keep parameters perfect between pulls to see if there's a 3-5 hp difference... I'm sure some stock eliminator guys have tested a few, but doubt you'll get them to post it publicly.

No point in doing it in the first place. A performer should be better than most factory ones if not all of them. Fast would be the only reason to even look into this.JMO

I'm just asking, as I'm learning about Olds engines, but I'm a Pontiac guy to start off with, and we've found that with the factory iron Pontiac intake manifolds that with just some port matching they actually are better flowing than the Performer intake, which the only advantage it has is it weighs less. Have to remember that aftermarket intakes just make the engine capable of raising the RPM capabilities. I know the Olds intake is a huge chunk of cast iron, but the comparison tests would be interesting to say the least.

Oldsmobile was aware sinking the carburetor between the valve covers to lessen the height of the engine might have a deleterious effect on power so they told the engineers they had to make up for it somehow. The Toronado was supposed to offer good performance despite its weight. The internal passages of the Toro intake are a little larger and hp levels of the Toro engine are comparable to 455s and 425s with the regular flat intake.

I'd like to see evidence of this statement.

All BBO factory intakes are same performance/flow wise, although W aluminum intakes are lighter, obviously.

Olds SBO and BBO intakes are junk. Period! Toros showed less HP than other styles due to it's design. Extrude honing does increase HP by 5-10 by enlarging the runners and equalizing the intake runner volume.

Yet to run this engine but the plenum mod I did should produce something.

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...ke-1970-a.html

Similar mods to iron Pontiac intakes are proven and support over 525 hp in S/S builds. If anything a 125 hp NOS plate would spray good. A SBO ported head, hot cammed and strokers and such may benefit well and retain a stock look other than headers.

I still have the intake from the tri-city competition wagon
"Stock" cast iron manifold with plenum floor a full inch lower from carb mount surface to the bottom oh has EGR port too LOL

The long-stroke Olds engines are taller than Pontiac engines. The engineers sunk the intake to allow hood clearance; therefore, the intake charge takes more severe changes of direction on its way to the head--and that reduces HP. Every Olds factory intake shares that performance defect. As stated, extrude hone is a good way to gain HP if you need to retain an original look.
