I want to get some thoughts on this...

I'm about to get a cam for a 71 rocket 350 w/ AC... Bear in mind, we'd be installing this on a convertible

My mechanic is sold on the CompCams XE274H... but I'm wondering if the idle could be too choppy/loud being that its going to be a 'weekend cruiser' & it is a convertible and I'll also be running Hooker Comp header and dual 40 series flowmasters (AMR THUNDR)

I myself am liking XE262H or XE268H...BUT

Just to mix it up some more, Lunati appears to have attractive cams too!

I would suggest calling both companies tech department and getting their recommendations.

I have run both Comp Cams Magnum 292 and the largest cam in Lunati Voodoo line, both idled OK in my opinion. There would be no way to think the engine was stock, but drove fine. These were both in 455 engines. I would think the cam your mechanic suggests would be ideal if you have the needed compression and converter. Mark (cutlassefi) might be another option to discuss this, he is a Earson tech adviser.

Yep, giving the manufacturer's a call Monday.... BUT I leaning on staying in either the 1200-5800 rpm range or the 1600-5800 rpm range which narrows my choices down to the XE262H or XE268H by COMP Cam... with the corresponding Lunati applications in thought!

I wouldn't recommend any of them. The XE 274 is way too big for a stock '71 350. That's a low compression motor unless you've done a rebuild with different pistons.
And unless you're changing springs and rockers the VooDoo line ain't the best choice either. Even though I'm a Lunati dealer as well I very seldom recommend the VooDoo line, too fast and hard on parts.

A good single pattern cam, something in the 215@.050 range would be your best choice.

If you engine is stock, it will be done at 4800, not 5800. Like Mark stated, those are too big. The true Cr is only around 8 to 1.

...we have yet to go thru this engine, however I do know the top end was upgraded with a Edelbrock intake, holley carb...I doubt any head work was done, but remains to be seen!
