As it states Im needing a 67 convertible, turbo 400 cross member for my 442. I decided to box the frame, there are aftermarket ones available I know. Their kind of pricey. If I can get one relatively cheap, I think ill go that route, instead of altering my open frame crossmember. Anyone parting a vert that might have one?

So you have a hardtop frame that has been modified with a section from a factory convertible frame? Is that correct? I have a '67 442 convertible at my shop right now, that has a T-400. I could match up a stock crossmember if that will work for you. Thanks, Bob.

 

I have a couple convertible crossmembers from the '68-'72 convertibles but don't know if they're the same as a '67? If so, $40.00 plus shipping?

 

Bob im not sectioning in a convertible frame. Im just welding in 1/8" plate to box my existing frame. My cross member bolts into the inside of the current "C" channel, where as I think a convertible crossmember mounts from the bottom.

Scott I dont know the answer to that question either... will investigate.

Steve, why not make some brackets to attach to the frame, shorten both sides of your existing xmember, drill 2 holes on each side and mount it back on.

 

Eric is right. I would modify the one you have. Unless you are going for factory correct. I do have one but your also right they are convertible only and spendy.

Couple of bits of mis-information to correct here.

1. All 1964-1967 convertible and Vista Cruiser crossmembers are the same. You don't need one from a 67 TH400 car.

2. The convertible frames are not boxed with simple flat plates. The frame uses the outside "C" channel frame sections from a hardtop and adds inner "C" channel sections welded open end-to-open end to make the box. The stock convertible crossmember will be too narrow for what you plan to do.

3. Simply welding flat plates to the stock hardtop frame is a lot of effort for very little benefit. It's really good at adding weight. It does very little to increase frame stiffness. That's why the convertibles have larger box sections formed from two C-channels - the resulting bending and torsional stiffness is much greater.

If you're going to go through all this trouble, find a convertible frame that's rusted on the outer sections and salvage the inner sections for your frame. This was a factory option on the 64-67 cars, the HD frame on hardtops and sport coupes.
