Wanted: heat shroud for 1968 full sized car manifold
Wanted: heat shroud for 1968 full sized car manifold
Hey guys, I think I need one too. I have a '68 Old 455 engine from a Delmont 88. The spot where the heat pipe connects to the shroud, on the shroud, is rusty and does not fit right. It takes a lot longer for the engine to heat up on a cold and day, is nosier, and the worst, one smells like fumes even after a ride. Having this little thing function right make a world of difference.
I did not know what to do, so a year ago a cheap fix I put muffler paste around it to seal it temporarily. Not the smartest thing to do I know, but it worked for a year. Now leaking again and symptoms back.
A couple of questions, can I buy the one from Fusick or is the Fusick one for just a 442? I am assuming I can use it as Samman used it for a Toranodo engine, but thought I would ask as the one from Fusick does not look like mine. I don't have that triangular piece. I attached a picture of the actual car shround and also a picture from the service manual. As you see in the service manual picture, there is not triangle piece like from Fusick.
Lastly, if I can use the one from Fusick, even though it is slightly different, it may still fit, do I have to actually remove the exhaust manifold? Is that something recommended to try for an amateur? I am a little handy not sure I want to tackle removing the manifold.

I moved this to its own post, I think you'll get a better response this way.
The 442 shroud is in high demand and expensive. For your car its a different story. I suspect you have a T manifold and need a shroud like this one. I'd remove and sell you the whole shroud for $20 plus shipping from Oregon. If you want to wait and see if other responses would provide just the attachment point, or one closer to save a couple bucks on shipping no problem. Just let me know what you decide. John

I just read back through your post. This should not affect the noise or if you smelled exhaust fumes or not. That would lead me to believe you have a bad connection from the manifold to pipe or a cracked manifold. You should investigate these other possibilities before making a decision to tackle this on your own. If you end up removing the manifold there's a chance that at least one of the manifold bolts will break off in the head. If your not real comfortable doing this kind of work get some estimates from shops and ask what the additional costs would be to remove a broken manifold to head bolt just in case.

Thank for the pictures John. Around 3 years ago I head a mechanic repair the connection from the manifold to the pipe. The noise decreased 65%. At that time I put this paste around the shroud, as the connection was way loose and and the fumes decreased another 25%. That is why I suspected the shroud. I see the shroud does not contact exhaust fumes. Perhaps I have another leak at the pipe or a crack in the manifold undeathe the shroud.
For good measure, is your manifold in decent shape? It is a T manifold. I may just buy the whole thing as I as may need it down the road anyway if not now.

Mine has some broken bolts in the exhaust pipe connections that will need to be removed. But no cracks or damage to the manifold itself. If your interested in the manifold & shroud please send me a PM or email with your shipping address and I'll get the total costs including shipping for you to consider.

Thank you gentlemen, I appreciate both photos. I took it to an exhaust mechanic and there is around 1/2 inch part of the exhaust gasket that is leaking. So at least as of now, I don't need the manifold, but I do need the shroud.
I am going to PM 2blu for pricing for now.
