Speedometer Reducer

My 83 H/O's Speedometer stoped working the other night, found it has a 10 mph Reducer, the tip which attaches to the Speedo side snaped halfway, not enough to make a proper fit inside the Housing. The Speedo shows at 25 mph the car is doing 10 mph,at 65 mph the Speedo is Buried.

Sounds like you removed the ratio adapter and screwed the cable to the trans. To get the right one, look for the value stamped on it (possibly 0.8241 or 0.7333). If you don't have that , you need to know your tranny model, axle ratio and tire size.

Ratio Adapter,Now i know what it's called thank you,The # on it is 0 8241XG,What would the Ratio be on this particular unit,If i can go with out it i could change the Gear in the Transmission to a Larger Gear to slow the Speedo,I've called a few Dealers in my Area, the majority of the Parts Guy's have no idea what i'm talking about.

The # stamped on it is the actual ratio. For every rotation of the gear in the tranny, it makes the cable rotate only about 82% of the way around, thus slowing your speedometer . Probably not possible to make the correction with gears alone (tooth / space limitation) or GM would have done it. Adapters are expensive. You've got to find a parts guy who can read the catalog! Check out that aftermarket site above, if no luck, GM part #15618395 had a list price $74.40. It's discontinued but a dealer in Alabama shows one on inventory. Bill Jackson Chevy Olds 1-888-743-3911. If you call, have them pull it and describe it to you as there were a couple of number changes.

I was able to fix the Drive Pin,went to a Transmission shop today, they had almost the same pin as I have, got it, did a little Grinding on the new pin and loe an behold it worked, thought I'd try something before shelling out $75.00.

Good work. I also try to fix or fabricate whenever possible myself. Nice car by the way. I just had to take my 85 off the road due to rust. Tranny lost reverse so I go to pull it, and the body mount areas are so rusted out, the floor is almost sitting on the crossmember. I suppose I could have gotten it out with a BFH, but while I was lying under there evaluating all the rust (especially the rear suspension), I decided it was time. Love that body style, I'll get another. Good luck with yours, keep it alive.
