If you have an 83, chances are good you have the 7.5 rear end.
I'm just having 3:42's dropped into my 72 - that's a 10 bolt corporate rear with 8.5 ring.

Also note, the 7.5 pinion shaft is shorter, thinner than an 8.5, obviously smaller ring, and has a completely different yoke collar.

I have a set of 3:23's that may work, but I have to check the ring size and pinion. Are you interested?

Well one guy said for a daily driver not to use the 3.42 because I would run high rpm on the highway?? Whats the 3.23s like?

Ok, first things first. You should have a 200R4 trans in the car. The 1,2,3 and OD ratios on it will compensate quite a bit for the taller gears. You will have higher rpms no matter what speed you're cruising, and at highway you're prolly going to see a significant change. I'm guessing right now you probably are around 2200 - 2300 at around 60 mph? With 3:23's you'll prolly be around 3000 rpms. That's not going to hurt the motor, it's just going to use a lot more gas.

I have to verify the 3:23's will fit a G body before I sell them in good conscience. If you want me to post some photos, I can do that. The ring and pinion gears are in very good condition, but do not come with the pinion bearing or shims. Just the gear and pinion.

Complete G body rearend

I have a complete 8.5 Gbody rearend with 3.42 posi if your interested.

With the 200r4 and 235 60 14 in OD it cruises down the highway @ 70 just over 2k rpm. Depending on the cam you are using it may surge a bit when the converter locks up.

If you have 15s, go with 3.73 still runs about 2200-2400 rpm @ 70 and a blast to drive around town with any torque.

MXman112 - I believe G body has a 7.5 rear end. Double check your measurements on the pinion shaft length and and diameter at the spline.

I know it is an 8.5 without going through your suggestions. Some of us actually know what we are talking about when replying to others. Not a poke at you but sometimes you have to give other people credit for being somewhat informed or experienced.

Point taken. I learned something new. Always thought G bodies were 7.5 from discussion with others. Now I know better.

I never intended my comment as a slam. I got burned on the web by a guy who sold me 3:23's that were guaranteed 8.5 and they turned out to be 7.5 . The shop doing the work said they were from a G body. So, my intent was solely to help. Should have spelled that out better I guess. I am just in the process of having 3:42's installed in my 72 because the 3:23's it was originally going to get weren't even close on the pinion.

Anyway, Good luck with the sale of your ring/pinion! I'll know better in the future

Had a similiar situation with a series 2 vice a series 3 carrier, which by the way may help Olds1971.

Depending on the original gears in the stock rearend and or the series a special ring and pinoin set is needed. The ring gear is thicker in some cases when going from higher to lower gearing.

I was just talking with some about that recently. The info they had said that a ring gear spacer would be needed if the series 3 ring gear was used with a series 2 carrier. Also there was a warning that it was not advised for an MT car, or if higher HP or or if there's a lot of traction, HP and/or weight involved

I did check with JD Race before buying my carrier. I needed to be sure it would handle a set of 3:42s.

With 3.42 and 235 60 15s your rpm will be a tad over 3K with a 350 turbo @ 70mph. This is real close to what the 3.23s are going to give you with the 14s.

With 3.42 and 235 60 14s " " 3.2K @70mph

Hope the info helps.
