Looking for Steel Flywheel for a 455

Looking for Steel Flywheel for a street 98% - /strip 2% 455 with a manual transmission which will be installed in a 68 Cutlass Post. The motor is currently at the machinist and I would like to get this to him for balancing in about 2 weeks. Please reply with price and shipping to 07066. Thank you, Vin

You can find the PRW steel wheels on ebay, SFI certified. Even if a track let me, I would never run with a cast wheel. Get an SFI appproved clutch also. I like the Quick Time bellhousing--very strong, lighter than Lakewood by about 12-15 lb.

No matter what housing you select, you must align it to the block. Lakewood makes offset dowels.

I had the replace the rear main seal in my 70 442 4 speed last fall and went ahead and replaced the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel so I have the factory flywheel just laying around. It was a little glazed from the seal leaking oil on it but you'd want to turn it anyway. Shipping looks like it would be $26. I'd sell the flywheel for $25 + ship to get it out of my way.

I actually have the stock clutch and pressure plate too if you (or anyone for that matter) can use them. Not sure if the clutch disc can be re-used or reconditioned etc after getting oil on it but, if so, it's available. Pressure plate should be fine. I think I only put about 5000 miles on them if that.

Randy

All factory wheels are cast. You can see the as-cast finish on the side facing the engine block.

That appears to be an older design steel wheel. If it has a machined surface everywhere, it is probably steel, not cast.

jensen, if vin442 doesn't want it, I would take it. I'm converting my car to a 4 speed and need a flywheel also, but the OP gets rights to first refusal.

Thanks.

if you are ok with a stock one i have 5 of those. also $90 plus shipping. i would consider all of them as needing surfaced. send me a PM if a stock one will work for you.

Thanks to all who posted. I went ahead and ordered the PRW flywheel as the machist needed it pretty quick. Jensen, Go ahead and offer it up to Tom. Thanks again for everyone's input. Hope to be running in the Fall! Take care, Vin

Almost all the 455 Olds powered jet boats have the stick flywheel. That is where I pick up most of mine. They also have stick crank shaft.

This is probably dumb question but.How do you align it to the block? Also when changing from auto to manual do I need to change the harmonic balancer?

No need to change the balancer.
If you have all the factory parts to do your change over, you should be good to go. It has work fine all these years. If you are using after market parts, then may be a good idea to align like they say.

Attach a dial indicator to a stud going into a flywheel mounting hole in the crank. turn the crank and indicate the hole for the transmission to see if it is perfectly in line with the crank. Also indicate the trans mounting surface to see if it is parallel with the rear face of the block by moving the indicator needle from the hole to that surface.
