Hi. I need a rear brake drum for 68 Olds 98. It is a 11 x 2.5" drum.

Rob, are you sure its 11"X2.5? I thought all Olds 98's of that year had 12" drums on the rear.

1965 - 1969 OLDS *** 98 *** -- and *** 98 *** ONLY is 11" x 2 1/2" INDEED....

I have ++ N.O.S. ++ USA made Rear Brake Drums and ++ N.O.S. ++ Asbestos ++ Brake Shoes -- which are *** critical *** for nice smoooooth braking and not ripping up brake drums to smithereens....

OK, I could be wrong, my memory could be off but lets bring Joe P. into the conversation to see. What I thought was that the full sized big block cars of this vintage had 12" rear brakes with the 9.3" rear end. The small block cars had 11" drums. But I believe all Olds 98's were big blocks. So... Joe can you clarify?

While I CAN rely on my memory because I have 14 billion part numbers committed to memory, my good friend Joe P. And I have -- ready for this -- catalogs !!!!

14 billion numbers committed to memory. Wow, we are fortunate to have you. I didn't even know there were that many parts in all cars ever made.

 

I am sure measured it myself. That year 98 had a option for it and was the only olds to use it. It was the heavy duty brake package. I can find the shoes it's the darn drums that are hard to get a hold of.

Question: Where do you think Joe P. Gets a lot of his N.O.S. & U.S.A. ???? He has been a VERY intelligent person for equally as many years !!!!!!!

 

My experience has shown that you don't want to bet against Craig's database.

The 1968 CSM shows 11x2 rear drums for all full size cars that year. The parts book lists different P/Ns for D88 and Ninety Eight rear drums, but the D88 Highway Patrol package uses the same P/N as the Ninety Eight. Unfortunately the parts book doesn't list sizes, just P/N (and interestingly, there are different P/Ns for RH and LH - go figure). The telling thing is, however, that the brake backing plates are the same P/N for both D88 and Ninety Eight, which tells me that the brakes are the same diameter. You couldn't put 12" brakes on an 11" backing plate. All the other internal rear brake parts are also the same (springs, e-brake struts, etc). They would need to be longer for a larger diameter brake system.

 

The problem with that is that it's 11x2.5" not 11x2.0 .

 

Are you measuring the drum or the lining? The drum will be wider than the lining. 11x2 refers to the linings. The drums on my 67 D88 have a friction surface that is about 2.5" wide.

11" x 2 1/2" absolutely -- the old # 261 brake shoe... Dead, dead, dead in the new world...
I have plenty ++ N.O.S. ++ Asbestos ++ fits 1965 - 1969 Olds 98 -- ALL ---
And the old C2267 Century Brake Drum -- same application -- ONLY....
