I need a non-tilt steering column for my 62 olds -88 . Direction parts shot ,cannot find one ,is there a interchange column from a buick or chev that would work? Any one with a brake down photo of column [ attachment ]

Jebear, I moved your thread and edited the title. Hopefully you get more replies this way.

I doubt a Chevy, Buick, Pontiac or Cadillac column from similar years would work. GM didn't start corporate parts until later. Have you considered an aftermarket column? If you don't have a steering column at all this would get you on the road again.

Unfortunately, those parts diagrams only give you the group numbers of the parts, not the actual part numbers. You need to look up the specific parts in those groups to know what is common or not. We don't even know what parts of your directional switch are bad. What exactly is the problem that makes you think you need a new column?

In any case, you need to check the listings in the parts book. For example, the Actuator Assembly in the first diagram Charlie posted is unique to the 1961-62 cars and is different for standard trans and automatic. The turn signal switch is common from 1957-1962 on the full size cars and is part number 1998138. Fusick and other vendors have the switch if that is your problem. Without knowing the details of what exactly is wrong with your car, suggesting that you replace the whole column is extremely premature.

 

Joe - Thank you for reply, I just got the car & turn lites did not work, so I took a look in column threads are striped & broken so I figured a different column.but maybe not if can find parts.

I have a steering column that I believe is out of a 62 but can't remember if it is column shift or floor shift. I can get pictures later today. If it is what you need I would let the entire thing go for $70 and shipping.

It could be out of a 63 but I want to believe they are the same. Either way, I can get you pictures of it and be sure.

Well, Sadly it is the wrong year. I think it is 63 but not sure.

63 was the first year that tilt was available . It was available in all GM makes , but only in the B and C bodies .

No , the actuator and switch both carry different part numbers for 1962 and 1963 .

Joe, I have the same issue in my '62 starfire but the actuator cam is actually physically broken. I think the
part # for the entire actuator assy is: 5674851. Would you know who carries this? I've
been looking , but no luck yet. Much appreciate any leads/info.

 

Hi John: I am not sure the late model steering column will work for Jerbear2. The dash already has the indicator even though "R" is the last selection not next to the "Park" location like in modern cars. Part of the charm of the older cars is to have the key on the dash where it belongs. Nice to have them moved on to the dash in late model Intrigues and Aleros. Plus the late model column has the interlock for the steering which might be a problem since it is not common on a 62. Regards, Trent in Los Angeles
