If that trans is original to your '65, then your '65 must be a 442. And built after Feb '65. If you want a correct shifter for it, it will be a very rare Hurst shifter that will have "442" on the handle and the whole word "HURST" on the upper part of the handle.

shifter

I am currently using a shifter from a Saginaw 3-speed trans. It works well but it positions the shifter in a strange position as it comes through the floor. That 'rare' word scares me some. Not looking to match the national debt! Thanks for the photos.

I think Kurt is referring to what would be correct for a 65... and that probably is rare.

However- The same ford 3spd transmission was used in 66 and 67 in cutlass's, 442s, and pontiac leman's and Gto's- so rare, but not that rare. Definitely not considered desireable.

I still have the original one in my car. in '66+, they just had an "H" on the handle.

I see these at swap meets all the time in the pontiac and olds booths.Post over on a pontiac board like performance years and you'll likely have a few offers to sell to you- though you may have to take the whole trans in order to get the shifter... LOL.

shifter

I would like a complete shifter mechanism with the rods. The(chrome) handle would be good, of course a **** is easy to get (I am not too concerned about 'spot-on' originality. Already have a newly rebuilt transmission. stan 65 cutlass: I went to BRO's site, thanks for the link. $350.00 is beyond budget for me, don't see the rods, either. RAMBOW: What kind of prices do you see at the booths? Condition?

I've seen the whole trans & shifter /w rods for $100 at swapmeets before at a pontiac booth.

No idea of their condition... its swapmeet type stuff. Like i suggested before- place a wanted ad on one of the pontiac message boards. you May have more luck.
