Wanted: Cheap, Usable '68-'70 350 in the NE US

It don't hurt to ask, right?

I'm looking for a stock(ish) high(ish)-compression 350 for my '73 Delta convertible that came to me with a 260 under the hood.

This is a cheap, fun driver, and I'm already going to have to sink a half a K into a new top, so I'm looking to go cheap here.

I want something that can be used (no mosquito foggers or rod-knocking rhythm sections), but don't mind a jigsaw puzzle so long as all the pieces are there.

I can probably scrounge up peripherals like a carb, but obviously, the more the better.

I drive between Maine and NYC every month or two, so I could get to anything within an hour or two of that range

Anyone out there with a nice high-performance 455 in his car and an old 350 taking up too much space in the corner of the garage?
If the price is right, I won't be picky - hell, a squirrel on a wheel will have more guts than that 260.

My just acquired 67 parts car has a later 350 in it 4bbl. Supposed to have new valves but they could not get it running so the story goes....I see they have the HEI hooked up to the resistor wire.....50 bucks and the complete engine is yours. #8 heads and EGR.

EGR, and #8 heads, huh? Thats a '73 or later. Guaranteed low compression, unless I change to flat top pistons, which makes me think about rings, bore measurements, ridge reamers, hones, and piston prices, and starts to sound like rebuilding an engine.

Tempting for the price, provided the motor's not AFU in some way the seller "forgot" to mention to you...

Could be one stop shopping, seeing as how I'm already picking up a rear from you.
Problem is, I wasn't planning to come down in my truck, so I'm relying on my old man for transport, and he's already grumbling about storage (in a 40'x60' pole barn) and driving and denting his nice truck, and all that stuff.

Anything else you can tell me about the motor and why they decided to change the valves, and whether they did anything else to it?

I am fully confident in my ability to make anything run, but hiding 700 pounds of iron, plus a minimum of several months of paternal bitching make me somewhat leery.

On the other hand, I did notice an unoccupied engine stand in his barn last time I was there...

My 1970 Rocket 350 was just dyno'd at 240hp / 325lbs ft at the rear tire.
That equates to roughly 300hp / 425ft lbs of torque - 20% for drivetrain loss.

It's been rebuilt to .30 over. Can't tell you want internals though because
my uncle lost the paperwork. Engine has less then 3,000 miles on it.
Looking to sell the entire drivetrain.

New 1407 Edelbrock with added electric choke.
Performer RPM intake
New CS130 140 amp alternator (for adding a beefy stereo)
New triple chromed valve covers
New plugs, New MSD wires
Headers
TH350 with shift kit
I'll even throw in the driveshaft.

I'm talking a full blown running engine, carb to pan , to driveshaft.
I'm in the Chicago area though. Make a reasonable offer, and I'll yank it out for you.
PM me if you're interested.

Aces - I'd really like to have your motor, but it sounds too nice to fit the required characteristic of "cheap."

olmace - Sounds like the exact motor I'd want (had one in a '70 Cutlass convert. years ago, and even worn out and badly abused, that thing flew). Problem is that though I'd walk a mile for a Camel, I wouldn't drive 1340 mile round trip for a motor.

Thanks anyway to both of you, though. I appreciate the offers.

MD post the motors you found on USHIP.com, you might be supprised how cheap you could get one of their engines transported. I had a fullsize Harley complete bike, moved from VA Beach to North of Pittsburgh for under $300, and I would think the motor would be a lot cheaper.

I had a complete LS1 / 4L60e trans shipped from Alabama to Chicago for $200 in a big *** home made cage of 2x4's.

12 bolt posi on an 8 foot pallet from Dallas to Chicago for $200
T-56 6 speed from Dallas to Chicago for $125

Just sayin......shipping isn't as bad as you might think.
All 3 were to a business address, my work , where I have a forklift.

Good luck in your search.

It looks like I've got a deal.

Thank you all for your offers!

I'll let you know exactly what I've got when I've got it in hand, and keep you posted as I do my Cheap SOB Build, which may well take over a year...

Thanks, Joe!
