Looking for the part in the photo below, for my '78 Toronado. I'm wondering if similar-year Delta 88s, 98s, or any other Olds, would be similar. It attaches to the top of the seat back and holds the rectangular clip the shoulder belt passes through. Both of these on my car are literally crumbling away. I was able to find one, but I need one more. Color does not matter as I can paint it.
I think most any GM car from 74 to late 80s had these. But they aren't that easy to find in good shape. Most are sun damaged and breaking down since they sit up high where the sun can get them. I was planning on posting a wanted ad for a set myself but was hoping for buckskin tan. I may be making a junkyard run for a few truck parts tomorrow so I'll let you know if I can find any good ones in the yards.
Mine looked worse than yours but I dyed them today, with some SEM, just to see how they would turn out since I was dying some other parts They still look bad.
I have to think there are some less sun damaged ones up north.
Thanks, I appreciate anything you might find. I realize that anything off of a car from back then is just as old as those on my car, but I'm hoping to find something that might have been a little more protected from the sun.
I bought a set of seat and shoulder belts for my car from one of our moderators who is parting out a '78 Toro, and he included one of these from that car. It was still in pretty good shape, and I'm using it. But he had only one good one, and that's why I'm looking for another one.
As a backup plan, I'm getting a piece of 1/4" stiff plastic sheet as I thought I might just try to make one. They're not that complicated a shape, so I figure I'd give it a try.
So most any GM 2-door car, should have these. No luck at a couple of my usual yards but it started raining and cut short the search. I did get all the truck parts I was after, so there is that. I'll be checking some other yards soon.
Thanks. The 1/4" plastic sheet (HDPE) arrived today. I'm hoping I can use a jig saw to cut a piece the same size as the original (I still have two that I can use as patterns) and cut the appropriate holes in it. If that works, I'll have to find a way to paint it if possible as the plastic is white.
Here's what my 8th grade shop skills allowed me to create from the 1/4-inch HDPE sheet. OK, it's probably a D- in terms of a grade, but, hey, it holds the belt clip in place! If I ever find a good used one, it will be no problem to switch it in. Until then, I have a workable shoulder belt clip on the passenger side.
Original, crumbling away, unusable one on the right, my creation on the left.
Installed on the car. The belt clip itself is a Dorman piece purchased new. It's black, I'm using them on both sides, and I'm debating whether I want to try to paint them red. So far, I'm thinking not. A little black trim in a red interior doesn't look too bad.
that looks like a good candidate for a 3d printer...weve got some wifi overhead projector adaptors that someone 3d printed a container for, and ill say the container came out pretty good.
Leave them black. If you dye them red, it will eventually wear off where the seat belt webbing rubs on the dye. You can see where that happened on the triangular guides (pic in post 2) from swiveling my bucket seat.
A little light sanding and those could be a B
I still have a hammer I made in 8th grade shop. I think I got a B. Not much to look at but I still use it 40 years later.
Hope you don't have to use those clip retainers that long.
