Oldsmobile Toronado 78- 85 oil pan

Need a front wheel drive Oldsmobile Toronado 79- 85 oil pan. From Olds 307, 350 or maybe even 350 diesel.

Ebay had it. interesting oil pan.





This one was $75 + shipping. New one below was like 130+. Interesting looks like GM extended the bottom of a gas oil pan to make make a higher capacity diesel pan by welding a deeper sump on it. Pickup screen for this pan will need to be longer. After the high horsepower 350 Diesel build for HighwayStar. Will detune engine in her now, as a back up for one of the 85 Sevilles or Eldorado.

Actually, it looks more like they simply flattened the pan forward of the sump to minimize the oil trapped by the axle notch. The deeper sump likely makes up for that lost volume. I'm assuming that since all 1979-85 Toros only came with SBO, the shorter stroke allowed this (the BBOs in the early Toros required the deeper pan to clear the throws and rods).

99.99% of the time you are correct. This one off of Ebay was removed from a 1984 Cadillac Eldorado with the Oldsmobile diesel.

Is the front wheel dive of the early Toros. The bases for the later 79 to 85 Toros and Cadillacs front wheel drive?

The early cars used the TH425, which was based on TH400 internals (clutch packs and planetary gear sets).
The later cars used the TH325 three speed and later the TH325L4 four speed OD transmissions. These were based on the TH200C and 200-4R. They will physically interchange with the TH425 but are obviously lighter duty. The physical package has external differences, but the differential and axle shafts are about in the same place relative to the block.

Joe, Oil change in the Cadillac shop manual. 85 Cadillac with 350 Diesel is 7 quarts with filter change.

With the engine oil cooler in radiator with 1/2'' lines to the filter adapter. It maybe 6 quarts pan.

85 4100 HT engine is 5 quarts with filter. With the engine oil cooler in radiator.

That is correct. The early Toro pan is also 6 quarts. The RWD diesel engines use exactly the same pan as the gas engines, yet the CSM shows greater oil capacity due to the cooler and lines.
My original statement stands. The deepened sump is likely to make up for the flattened forward part of the pan as compared to the early ones.

So this pan, would fit in my 87 cutlass. And not hang down far below aftermarket headers. And looks like the diesel pan turns away from the passenger side headers.

Giving more room to fit and add the diesel oil filter adapter. And Mishimoto Inine Oil Thermostat with 1/2'' steel lines to cooler. Or just add remote filter adapter & Mishimoto Inine Oil Thermostat with 1/2'' steel lines to cooler.

Large wix filter almost sets on the headers now. Would need to go to a smaller wix's with diesel oil filter adapter.

I do not think a Canton oil pan will fit. It looks like it would hit the headers. Which is also 6 quarts pan. And cost hundreds more.

Moving in January. Need to get the plan together for gas DX build..

To be more precise, I believe that RWD diesels used a big block gas pan.

You are correct. I didn't realize that, but the parts book clearly shows the BBO pan on the 350N (diesel) motors. Thanks for pointing that out.
Of course, still the same 5qt system. The extra oil quantity in the diesel is in the cooler and lines.

99.98% Joe! So no one tried a 79-85 front wheel drive oil pan. In a rear wheel car for the 1 extra quart? Or it just hangs down to low?

Diesel pan will not be here for a week or so. For me to take measurements. It looks like 3.5'' to 4'' deeper. Normal SBO is like 7" deep. That like 10.5'' to 11.5''

Would add windage- baffle. Canton pan would be a battle for me to fit. Will craw under to see, after it gets here.

Not to bring up a old thread but great info .
and MAN these pans are so hard to find . You type in 1979 toro and pans pop up everywhere but do not look like joes pic of the small olds pan with axel relief and deep sump . A guy on eBay wants $250 smh.. I'm lucky I got my 79 eldorado parts car with a 307 in it factory..but I haven't looked at the pan..hoping itl fit my 350? Will it ?
