need a mexhanics lein

I've been told a way to get a title for my car it involves having a mechanic take a Leon out and then getting a title and transferring it to me

Boy, there's so many ways to go with this, I don't know where to begin. Maybe I'll just take the safe route and stay quiet.

Check with your states Dept of Motor Vehicle Registration. Some states have a bonded title method where you apply for a title and post a monetary bond. After a length of time, if no one claims possession via an original title, the vehicle becomes yours with a title in your name.

In order to get a mechanic's lein, you have to be a mechanic and have a shop.

Wouldn't it just be easier to put up the $100 bond and do it the right way?

Bill, I would think as a mechanic lien if a person stepped forward and stated that they didn't authorize his services they would get the car. a true lien is from non payment and some cars already have liens and the person / bank pays for the service or losses there investment.

Do it right get the bond ! it will be yours honestly with no questions it's really a small fee and a good lesson for future purchases

Yes, just to be clear, if a mechanic swears out an affidavit that says that a person owes him money for services rendered but unpaid, and if anything goes wrong, like the real owner of the car shows up, he could be jailed for perjury and fraud.

Seems a big risk to take to avoid putting up a $100 bond that you'll get back later.

In Texas a mechanic's lien to be processed has to be accompanied by a signed work order from the car's owner.

Just went through the Bonding process here in Tx and let me tell you, it was easier than what they seem. Can do it in a day. Filled out 2 forms, cost 15 at the DMV, 100 at the Surety Bond place, and 121 at the Tax office to get the title made. Some of these places that i have talked to charge 250 just for the first 2 steps.

With the bonded title and being older than XX amount of years (cant remember exactly) they put a set value of 4k(6 for bond reasons i think they said or something like that.) The other thing, not knowing your situation, is they send a letter to whoever was on the title and from their if its reported stolen by that person....

It took me 6 months to get my title because the first 4 people I talked to at the DMV didnt know what they were talking about. I was told I couldnt get a title many times but when I finally talked to a guy that knew what he was talking about it was easy.

SEMA has a Tag and Title Toolbox that provides title and registration info for all 50 states. Here's the info on NC.

Also, go directly to the NCDOT website, where they describe the process and provide the forms on this page.

Any of you guys ever hear of Alabama???? It was a piece of cake. Several states where it can be done legal and quick for an old car---last one I did was a 70 GTO.....The paper work came back from Ala and I went to the DMV and got a title---just like that. I think Broadway Title was the name of the place I used.
