i am having great luck with the pertronix ignitor and flamethrower coil. it converts your existing distrib. to a elctronic egnition replacing your points.

A 12 volt wire has to be run to the coil to hook up a Pertronix. The normal resistor wire can't be used, it has to be a full 12 volts hot when cranking and when the key is on.

my car had a late model 76 and newer HEI distributor in it. I just recently took it out, if you are interested let me know, I have the ignition wires as well. I did go back to the original distributor with petronix in it though and I don't know what else is needed besides the distributor and wires.

You can use your original coil. Here are some links to Pertronix

I used an Accel 40,000 volt coil when I put the Pertronix in my boat and it works great. I don't know there is much difference in price. I would not use a stock coil if that is what you are asking. I have a later model GM HEI in my 72 Cutlass. It has worked great but you will find the cap on the HEEI is a lot bigger although it fits. You will also have to change plug wires which you do not have to do with the Pertronix unit. A good set of wires aren't cheap so figure that in. If I were doing mine today I would use Pertronix. It is easier and you don't even have to pull the distributor.
