Hi, does anyone have a hold in relay for a 70 442 - this mounts on the passenger side fender and/or a original compressor that was rebuilt for r134a? I'm looking to round up the items I need to get my AC back in order.

Larry, I don't know myself only that the service manual calls for one - I can read up on it but if someone wants to put it in simpler terms I would appreciate knowing the exact need for it.

It is a part that should have never been... When you turn on the A/C it will never turn off till the key is turned off and back on. I have the one on my W-30 hooked up correct but I am going to rewire it to turn off when the switch is off. It will only be there to look original. If you only want it to look original it does not need to be a working one.

I checked & I have about 13 other relays but not the AC hold in relay.

Here is a thread I did on this relay and how to correctly modify it to work like a more modern car. I also show how to use another relay, like a headlight relay, that can be hidden and yet not change the appearance of the equipment under the hood but eliminate the use of the factory relay if it is dead. Keep it there for looks, but the relay function will be elsewhere.

The relay was there for a reason which was to run the compressor when the defroster was used for dehumidification purposes. I also show how to do this too and be able to turn off the compressor through the dash controls.

I'll also look to see if I have a relay as I may.

I have 2 but I need to see if they work. I'll do that tomorrow. You should follow the information in my thread to make sure yours is really dead and it is not just a bad ground where the coil internally is grounded to the cover. They get rusted sometimes and you lose the ground. Sometimes cleaning it up brings it back to being functional.

Yeah, very dumb that you could turn the AC off and the compressor remained engaged. I hated that on my '70 Cutlass so back in the '80s I wired a toggle switch to the relay. Lotsa times on the highway I wanted to turn the AC off without turning the ignition key off.
