I'm looking for a good condition or even rebuilt column for my 68 442. This is a non-tilt manual trans car, although I would entertain the idea of a tilt column if the price was right.
After messing around trying to get some weird issues ironed out with mine, I've come to the conclusion that somebody cobbled it together from multiple cars, with not all of the correct parts...
Rather than waste any more of my time on it, I just want to replace the damn thing, and get my car back on the road.
Apologies, doing this from my phone which I’m not used to. Normally I have multiple PC monitors in front of me so I didn’t catch that Dr Olds wasn’t the owner of the ad linked.
Here is how the Ididit tilt column looks in my 68 Vette. Very high quality well made assembly.
The steering wheel adaptor is billet and the shaft is raw. I clear-coated both. The contrast blends well in the sun.
Get a new firewall seal and rag joint kit. Fusick Year One for both.
The wire harness connector must be a generic shell GM used for a few years as 1/2 of it is empty and can be trimmed down for a cleaner install.
The horn contact needed a minor modification to work(someone or I should tell Ididit this). I can detail that if needed.
The threaded holes in the billet adaptor are a different thread count compared to the OEMs. (I should tell Ididit that too). Source quality SS taper head screws that match the threads in the adaptor from a good hardware source. Home Deep Hole generally sells chineasium grade -8 fasteners. Not what you want holding a steering wheel on.
The other trouble spot was the pins in the box side adaptor. See the new shiny pins by the clamp bolt? You need to grind off the heads and drift punch them out. The kit comes with new pins. The joint instructions made no mention of this. Grind carefully so you don't damage the adaptor.
Not sure how much of this applies to a 68 Cutlass but I'll bet 99% does.
