exhaust manifolds to fit my 455

PURCHASED A SET ALREADY. THANKS TO ALL WHO OFFERED.

Checking in and hoping someone has a dirty, rusty, not very nice set of exhaust manifolds that will fit my 455 when I first start it up as a rebuilt engine. They don't have to be for any particular model as the engine is going in the 47.

.

Hi Jerry
I've got some manifolds down in Medford Oregon. But first let me ask if your steering is in front of or behind the crossmember. I'm not familiar with your vintage, but think that may make a difference in which manifolds will work for you. John

Hi John and thanks for responding. The 47 Olds is a hot rod with Mustang II front suspension and rack and pinion steering is in front of the crossmember. The crank pulley clears the aftermarket MII crossmember just enough to be sure I can change belts. If the Olds crossover pipe goes around the lower front of the engine then the crossover is a no fit.

The exhaust manifolds will only be used when I first fire up and adjust the rebuilt engine ( '68 455 out of a Delmont 88 with C heads) with the thought that if it is lean from timing, plugs etc. and gets hot manifolds, it won't hurt anything to be running the old cast iron set. Taking a chance on discoloring those brand new, coated Sanderson shorties would be a near disaster. The total engine time I need the stock manifolds for is probably less than an hour.

Plus when the engine is shut off the cast iron manifold will hold heat and prevent cold ambient air from getting to the exhaust ports and possibly warping exhaust valves.

I need to ask you if it is possible to put together a couple of manifolds that exit toward the rear without using a crossover. I'm not familiar at all with stock Olds configuration.

Also is it true 350 manifolds can be used and if so would their outlet configuration allow rear and downward exhaust?

Any advice you can provide would be appreciated and if you have something that meets my needs.

Engine is a 1968 455 with C heads. It came out of a same year Delmont 88.

Your message sounds like you have 350 manifolds (numbered heads). I had heard but not confirmed that they will also fit 455 heads. I am not finicky as long as the manifolds bolt to the C heads and push the exhaust gas down. At best there will only be a foot or so of exhaust pipe bolted to them as I will only be running them long enough to fire up a newly rebuilt engine and make sure timing etc. is set correct.

I didn't want to risk discoloring the coated Sanderson shorty headers that will be the permanent exhaust from an engine initially running too lean.

I can see now I should have started off this thread with questions about what would work on a temporary basis to make sure engine settings are correct on a newly rebuilt engine.

Thanks for any help/advice you can provide.
Jerry

Jerry, yes the small block manifolds will bolt up to the big block heads. They are smaller inside so they won't flow as well. But for what you want I'd think they would work fine. Here's a set of small block manifolds with the studs intact. If you decide you want them the price would be $30 for the pair plus shipping from Southern Oregon. Let me know what you decide. John

I have a couple 1970-71 350 engines with the #4 398704 passengerside manifold and the drivers side is #1 380001. I'm not sure but believe these numbers were used from 1968-72ish. I think the #4 411961 & #1 411962 may have started in the mid to late 1970's. I've also got some passengerside #5 417754 that I believe are late 1970's. This is kinda ball park on the years, someone who knows more about these will have to clarify. John
