70 442 rear bumper
70 442 rear bumper
Hello, I am interested in buying a rear bumper with exhaust cut-outs for my 70 cutlass. If anyone has one for sale or knows of one for sale please let me know. I am not interested in paying $400 for a new one. Thanks.
I have no idea what it is to rechrome one but i hope to find out soon. I plan to take many parts to the plater to get an estimate in the next couple weeks. a front and back bumper are a couple of the parts i am getting a quote on.
Call Northstar Chrome in the Twin cities area or Paul's Chrome Plating in Evans City PA. They usually have cores ready to go or might have re-chrome stock on hand. If its a good core expect to pay $300ish I haven't purchased one in about 5 years. The last rear bumper I got from Northstar was for a 68 and it was $225-250ish, excellent triple show chrome! Do not get the single plating you will not be happy. The reproduction houses have them but I'm afraid to ask where they are made cuz you know what the answer will most likely be.
re-chroming a bumper will cost anywhere from $300 - $400 all the way to $1,300 or so. The top end is obviously show quality, that's the estimate I got from a shop in Chicago - thus why my bumpers are still original!
I don't need show quality but with more environmental restrictions the cost is going up so either you need to go far away from the bigger cities or sometimes settle for less.

Any shop that puts out anything better than trash is going to charge at least $400.00 to chrome one. Double that or real nice work. New repops go for 300-350.00 but chrome is only decent and fit and finish is not near as nice as OEM. I just put one on a 72 and the tail lamp openings and hole for the lamps were a good bit different than factory.
Wow $1300 for a re-chrome! It was only 2006 when I had Northstar re-chrome one for me. To top that the core I sent was too thin from a previous re-chrome so it was junk. All they had for cores was a Cutlass core so they cut the 442 cut-outs out and grafted them into a Cutlass bumper then triple plated it. Top quality show chrome, not a ripple or wave or grind mark, and I'm picky. I can barely see the welds on the back side from the grafting. That cost 260-280 tops in 2006 if I remember correctly... memory is the second thing to go. I will have to dig out that receipt for sanity sake. I did go through a well known body shop who did regular business with Northstar. So there might have been a 15-20% discount but I don't think that was the case just got free delivery because they had a regular truck run between towns? So Has inflation and EPA regulation gone that crazy? $800-1300! wow!
