having big time grief trying to find a flywheel or ring gear for my Olds. Has the 425 c.i. engine w/ turbo 400 behind it. appears to be stress cracks in flywheel, and takes multiple tries to find good place on flywheel to start. The 330, 400, 425, and maybe 455 should be about the same. Looking online, all the flywheels are for manual transmission.

Anybody have any ideas on where to get a flywheel, teeth on Bendix are good, as that is what I had originally suspected. rotated flywheel through starter engagement hole, lots of worn teeth.

Try searching for a flex plate instead of a flywheel. A flywheel is for a manual transmission whereas a flex plate is for an automatic transmission. Also, the 455 flex plate will not work with the 425 - you need one for a 330, 425, or early 400 engine, all of which are 1967 or older. The 1968 and newer flex plates have a different bolt pattern and will not work.

 

Any 1964-1967 Olds flexplate works - they are all the same. The 64-67 motors cover the 330, B-block and E-block (short stroke) 400, and the 425. A 455 flexplate will NOT bolt up, nor will any 1968-1990 flexplate. You can buy a brand new SFI flexplate from Jegs or Summit for about $130. Speedmaster P/N 1-226-004 has both early and late bolt patterns and a balance weight that can be moved to the position appropriate for each application.

 

I have this one if you want. No cracks and the teeth are in great shape.

Haven't been on for awhile, between the heart and the lung trouble, and the cold weather, been on the downside. Had to farm out the flexplate job, not able to crawl under as good as I did 50 years ago. 7 decades come September.
Mechanic says when he enters Holiday Coupe in he gets different part number. I'm stating to scratch my head in wonder (if he knows what he is doing). Will go to Summit website and get things moving on it, I want my baby home.

 

i doubt Summit will have an early (pre-1968) flex plate. Most likely they will have only the later ones that don't fit your engine.

Well that sure surprised me.

 

Summit does have the flexplate, but JEGS is cheaper on the price. Hays is a steel one for $109.95, Hughes @ $ 152.99, and ATI for $227.99. all are free shipping since purchase is over $99.00.Anybody care to weigh in on which one is best?
And Joe is correct (once again) all are 166 tooth with External balance.

 

They are all steel. The SFI certification is only necessary if you plan to drag race. There are Chinesium non-SFI rated versions available in the $60 range, but I would not recommend those. Frankly, I'd just get a used original and not look back.

 

 

Did you try using the other bolt pattern?

 

I swear I rotated this thing around 1080* and this was the closest pattern! (I marked one hole to make sure I didn't miss any as I rotated it). I will look again this evening, but I'm 99.9% certain, that this is the closest pattern. There's a used oe flexplate on eBay but they want $120 for it. (ouch!). I was hoping that I'd get this crank back to the machine shop today so that they can balance it.

 

Not to sound stupid, but are you sure that it's facing in the correct direction? I can't understand why they would put a dual pattern on it, unless it fits some other make of engine. BTW, I have a couple of good used ones, if you like. Email me direct: drolds1@bellsouth.net. Thanks, Bob.

 

I definitely did a stupid! It was facing the wrong way! That’ll teach me for trying to work on stuff late at night. I swapped it around so the weight is on the front side and all is well.

FWIW I paid $37 plus shipping directly from Procomp on eBay. The dual pattern is supposed to fit all Oldsmobile cranks from 64-90.
