I have unexpectedly acquired a 67 Cutlass Supreme, and have promised to try to make it right again.
Having a hard time finding everything I need so I'm hoping some of you might be able to help.
The steering wheel has several cracks in the centre where the three arms connect to the the post. I found someone up here who does steering wheel restorations but I would need a 2nd mortgage to pay of it. Wondering if anyone has a decent one or can recommend a restoration option.
Also in need of a dash bezel paint. Can't afford the deluxe restoration to factory perfect but would like to get something close. Again, any recommendations or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
The tan areas on the dash were originally chromed, I would leave it alone for now, its patina. Patina can be desirable on some things LOL! The steering wheel you can repair yourself with filler and paint with very good results. 67 was a bad year for steering wheels, most all are cracked by now.
That's what I am finding. Little hesitant to take the wheel apart. Would prefer to get someone on board who has done one or two before. I don't feel confident enough not to mess it up.
Yeah thats a little rough looking. Many of us are not experts, some of us have never owned an old car before. For alot of members we saw what someone else did and how it was done and then we tried and generally got good or great results.
i reccomend looking thru the major builds threads for inspiration and self encouragement. Alot of guys are amatuers that have done what amounts to prolevel work. When i got my car it needed floors. After hemmining and hawing i bought a welder took aclass and replaced my own floors. Imo they came out great, and now i weld all kinds of stuff, i have even made some parts for my car, like a bracket that holds my overfow tank. Point is sometimes you need to try and see what you can do. I know there was at least one thread w someone restoring their wheel, ill try to find it and post back.
re the yellow dash part. Many people have used a silver paint pen for stuff like that. The silver paint isnt shiny like chrome, but its much nicer than yellow. Also some paint pens are better than others. For my dash (72) the silver paint pen is exactly the same as the chrome thats lost its shine but is still silver.
seems most people use a 2 part epoxy. You might be able to find a wheel thats better than yours but still needs work and test your skills on your wheel first. Or their are aftermarket wheels that look period correct.
sometimes and i do this myself too, we get hung up on the correctpart for our cars when in all but concours restos a similar or modern day replacement will work fi e and will go unnoticed by most people.
unless your in a rush take your time do some research an see what others have done, most of our cars are 40 or more years old, theres a good chance someone has faced similar problems and posted a solution.
