65 Oldsmobile Starfire headlight assemblies

Need both RH and LH headlight assemblies. Someone switched out the car we are restoring with a delta 88. Also need the RH front fender (in front of the wheel/lower moulding). Thanks Brandon

As you're probably aware the 1965 Jetstar I/ Starfire grille and headlight housings are very different from the 88/98. Add in that they're diecast and finding nice or even restorable ones may not be easy.

The headlight doors also had a clear glass rectangular cover that attached to the chrome door and covered both sealed beams. That cover is often long gone but is part of a correct 1965 Starfire/ J-I restoration.

I'm not certain as I can't find any mention of it in the tech bulletins/Service Guilds, but the cover may have been discontinued sometime during the model year. Some states had archaic laws on the books prohibiting such styling cues.

I'm going to go ahead and disagree with any recommendation to call GM Sports Salvage, based on personal experience (if curious, one could check my posting history to find out more).

As for those plastic headlight covers, has anyone ever seen a car with these and happened to have a camera with them? I think I've seen them ONLY very indistinctly in some promotional photos, and I am inclined to think that IF any cars were even sold with them, if was the vast minority / perhaps earliest production dates. Any search for a set would represent the wildest of goosechases in my opinion.

I did have a set of just the diecast bezels for sale a while back, pretty sure they are gone, but will check my inventory.

Scott, there was a junker 65 in a yard here that had those covers. At the time (18-20 years ago) I did not have presence of mind enough to get them or anything else from that car as I was pushed for time that day. Then never went back. Next time I went in that yard, the car was gone.

I've got this pair. Chrome bezels are rough, lots of pits and a small crack in one bezel radiating out of one of the mounting screws. Silver painted rear housings are good, no cracks or damage, but both need to be blasted and repainted. All headlamp hardware is there. $75 plus the shipping for the pair.

We are restoring this car for a customer that has owned the car since he was in high school. He said the brakes failed at some point with the great one lung master cylinder and his wife hit a building with the RH front side. This is why parts were swapped out for Delta 88 parts.

Just thought I would give a little background on what we are doing. You can also visit us at www.gforcecustoms.net and click on the Facebook link on the bottom of page and follow the restoration of the car.

We just purchased RH and LH front fenders from GM sport salvage. Both fenders look just as described. Overall happy with purchase.

(jhoppeolds) This is just what I am looking for. I will probably wait to see if there is a better set that shows up but will definitely keep those in mind. Thanks for picture and quick response.

Aways nice to hear of one of these cars getting restored.

I think that set Jhoppe is selling is worth picking up, as the housings can always be painted to match the factory "cast" appearance. The bezels will either have to be rechromed, or an NOS source found. I found an NOS pair (one at a time actually) for my Jetstar I...it took about 6 years to find both. And don't forget, the Starfire/J1 grille is also different from the Delta/Jetstar piece.

As for those plastic headlight covers, I have to assume that set RR saw was aftermarket. I've owned 2 '65 Starfires and 2 '65 Jetstar Is, have seen many others in person and on the net, and I have never seen any evidence that any factory cars came with these. I can't even imagine how they would be installed.

That's entirely possible. An uncle had a set of hemispherical clear glass covers on his Ninety Eights starting with the 68. He kept them until he traded the 74 on the 1979, which having rectangular headlights, they wouldn't fit. Never knew where he got them, but he transferred them from one to the other whenever he traded. Those fit under the headlight mounting ring.

I looked thru the 74 parts book and could find no mention of the 65 covers anywhere, so if they existed, they'd been discontinued before then.
