evaporator

I don't know. The evaporator is on the firewall behind the engine. I don't have any parts book to reference It. Do you have a pic of it? I haven't taken mine out but will do so tomorow.

Have you checked Fusicks?

You might also check various aftermarket companies. If you are rebuilding the AC in your 98 then you might consider using modern parts since the old systems weren't designed for R134a. An R12 system charged with R134a won't cool as well as it originally did.

BTW, I merged the threads.

If you have the original evaporator then why do you want another? They are a non wear item. If it leaks then you can take it to a radiator shop and they can braze it for you.

Checked with Fusick, doesn't have a lot of this kind of stuff. I will take it to a radiator shop altho I know its hard to do an evaportor. The oil has to be out of it completely. Really needs to be flushed with r-11 I think. I Will take it in and see what happens. By the way found a new evaporator and its onlly $400.00 bucks. Not going to buy it.

Well I certainly don't want to sell you something you can't use, I don't roll like that. I can take a picture of it after I dig out from the snow storm we're suppose to get.

Well, does it leak? or could the leak be elsewhere in the system?

If it's still in the car or if you take it out I wonder if a pressure test can be performed by the radiator shop. I would think it to be a simple procedure to test but that's me.

For example, many years ago the heater core in my 67 Cutlass (not the one in my avatar/sig pic) was leaking and a friend showed me how to find the leak. After I took it out he had me plug one pipe with my thumb and blow into the other pipe (yes I flushed it out with water) and we found the leak! Then we used a plumbers torch and some solder (forget which type) to plug the leak between the fins on both sides. It worked like a charm for many years before I parked the car!
Hell with the proper plugs, gauge on one and something like a valve stem on the other. Pump it up a little and watch the gauge... You know the rest.

Sorry so long winded here. Just trying to help when I can and maybe save you some $. I know there are others here that can be of more help on your leaking A/C system.

Truthfully, I doubt the evaporator would leak. It never moves, and it is insulated pretty well from rubbing and friction.

Ed, why are you trying to find an evaporator? Give us the whole story. If your AC simply isn't working then it is probably because the lines have deteriorated over the past 40+ years and all of the refrigerant leaked out.
