455 dipstick

Looking for original from a 70-72 455, with the red plastic tip on the handle.
Thanks

I know it's not original, but Supercars Unlimited has this. It looks really close

That sucks. Is the dispstick the same for all Olds 455's? If so I'll keep an eye peeled in the local boneyards. Not too many peeps just want a dipstick...

Give one of these guys a PM, they likely will have something. They part out cars all the time.

I painted the tube and the handle of the dipstick. If the tube was not to be painted a ruined the original bare steel finish of an NOS tube, It even had the orange paint splotch on it.

I'm not the expert on this. I did find this on Hemmings about a restored 71 442 W30. The article below this tells the story. For your consideration

That may be the correct way. I have not looked at the engine assembly manual to see if it is in there. The above car has the X on the valve cover... This just kills me. I have no documents to prove this but nobody will convince me that it was on anything other than a 72 W-30.

I really don't know what to suggest on that Eric. Here's another one from a 'restored' 71 442 that sold on BJ. I also looked at a lot of 72 442 W30's (if they were real or not is anyone's guess) that didn't have any markings at all.

This you might find interesting. It's a video showing one of James Krytas 442's. A 70. In the video they also show that X on the VC, but also look at the dipstick and handle.

Far as I know, dipsick was bare and tube was painted. The X? When somebody does something or sees something they think is right, the y follow along. I call it..."gold alternator fan syndrome". So...James Kryta started that X and says they all should have it because it means engine "OK" or whatever. I've looked at hundreds of cars in junkyards and don't remember seeing any "X's". How do we know that X doesn't mean the car won't start on the assembly line, or the valve cover leaks? I've seen an X on 69 washer tanks, I've seen it in factory pics. That makes sense because the tank was black and the X meant it was full.

I have no idea what the X means. Fact is I think it spoils the look of the car. As you mentioned, X sort of has a negative connotation. If it passed I'd have marked a check or 'ok' The images and vids I posted are not intended to be proof positive of anything - just something for Eric to look at in reference to the dipstick. The X was a spin off of the discussion.

It's interesting to see 3 different cars with 455's - 2 with dipsticks not painted , and one with. Doesn't answer the question of which is right IMO. I'd love to see someone with an original chime in on the discussion. Is it possible that some engine assembly plants painted the dipstick and others didn't? Stay tuned to this Bat Channel for the revealing answer.....
