3 Series '67 4-4-2 Axle Housing

3 Series '67 4-4-2 Axle Housing
Need axle housing that will accept an original 3.23 8.2" gears and posi unit.
Need same for an original 3.90 8.2" gears and posi unit.
Not sure if both use the same housing.
I think 3.08 and 3.23 use the same housing and 3.55, 3.90 and 4.33 use a different housing.
(I have "2" series housings. They won't work.)
I need to check.
Reasonable distance from Charleston, WV.

I always thought the housings were the same, just the carriers and gears were different.
I had acquired a '67 3.23 8.2" posi, with a heavily pitted axle housing.
The axle housing in my car was a 2-something non-posi, but, a nice housing.
I took the 3.23 posi to a mechanic to have the 3.23 posi installed in the 2-something housing.
He told me it wouldn't work.
(I'm not a rear end guy, but, I know what a posi carrier is and that
the carriers only fit a certain range of ratios before a different carrier must be used.)
Like you guys, I had always thought all the axle housings were alike with different guts.
When he told me it wouldn't work, I just assumed I had been wrong all these years.
So, I guess you guys are saying I WAS correct in thinking the 3.23 posi should have worked in the 2-something housing?
I have two rear ends that need this same conversion-a 3.23 and a 3.90, both '67 8.2" posi.
Actually, the 3.90 is out of a '66 housing, but, i'm putting it in a '67.
I thought the only difference was the coil spring mounts. Am I wrong?
I could just do the change myself.
I'm just not confident in my lack of experience in getting the shimming done properly so the backlash is right.

Thanks, but, to be correct I need a '67 since the spring mounts are different.
You probably already know this, but, the '66 has the flat mount
that requires a retainer plate and bolt on the spring.
The '67 has a shoulder on the mount so no retainer plate or bolt are required.
Once the shock is installed, the spring can't come off.
Just for reference, what is the condition and price?
