3.23 Ring and Pinion

Looking to get my 1970 442 back to original rear end ratio of 3.23. Anyone have a suggestion as to where to source this ratio ring and pinion? Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Does your car still retain it's original Oldsmobile Type O differential and what is your current carrier and ring and pinion combination?

If you still have a Type O and want to go back to a 3.23 you may need more than just a gear swap depending on what you have now.

Scrappie - thank you for the information.
Oldsmobile Dave - I am out of the country and can't remember for the life of me if it has the original style differential. I calculate it currently has 3.73 gears based on mph/rpm.

3.73 is not a ratio available in the O-Type, so if your calculations are correct then you have a different rear, likely either an 8.5" 10 bolt or a Chevy 12 bolt.
The closest O-Type gears to what you calculate would be 3.42 or 3.91.

3.23 in a 12 bolt cover type O factory gear is hard to find. Also the factory POSI carrier is only used on 3.08 and 3.23 ratios this is another part that is hard to find

If some one changed the complete axle out of your car , then you will have to figure out what is in there now.

I do have a complete 3.23 ratio rear axle removed from a 1971 442 and am located in maple grove Minn
As well as a 3.08 POSI ratio rear axle from a 1970 442 with 12bolt cover

3.23 Ring and Pinion

I have several complete oem type "O" rear ends. This would be correct for your '70. Email me direct: drolds1@bellsouth.net. Thanks, Bob.

Thank you guys. I will be back in the country in a couple of weeks and will double check the rear-end and my calculations on ratio. I will be in contact once I have a better understanding of what I currently have in the car.

Hello SmirchIs31. I know this thread is a couple of years old but I was wondering if you still had your 3.23 Type "O" ring and pinion gears for sale? If you do or don't can you please send me an email at davec191145@gmail.com or text me at 757-235-1006? Thanks and take care.
