I use 1977 backup light lenses in my '76 Cutlass Salon coupe because they allow more light to be projected . . . and yesterday one fell out and was lost! This is, unfortunately, not the first time this has happened . . .
Attached is a photo of what I need. Lettering at bottom reads "DOT (2) R77". I will take just the lens, or a whole '77 unit if someone has one.
I plan to install the lenses with white silicone seal from now on (for better shock resistance) . . . unless someone has a better idea.
Does anyone have a part number for these lamp units? I could use it to search for what I need. I don't suppose that the lens itself has a part number (couldn't find one) and the lamp units themselves are a very tight fit and bit of a pain to remove and install; truthfully, I think that R&R-ing them to replace my rear license plate filler is what caused the one lens to fall out in the first place.
What's the difference between 76 and 77 backup lenses? I know the front park/turn signal lenses are different but I didn't know there was a difference in the backup lenses.
IIRC it seems that the '76 lenses were less transparent, hence less able to project light than the '77s. There is a visual difference in the opacity when the two years are compared side-by-side.
At this point, I would take a set of '76 pieces just to be able to get something to cover the one that's missing the lens . . .
I have the '77 backup lights and I don't see any way of removing the lens without damaging it. The ones I have are good enough for a daily driver, however each of the four I have has a small corner chipped off ( a little strange?) It would be hidden once installed. Can send pix if you are interested.

76 lense , of the 4 sides it has 2 sides that are extended about a quarter inch . If you put both pictures together you will see the difference .
As there was 2 style of housings . I have also found 3 different sets of the stainless trim that surrounds the the gas compartment .

Jeff , I have taken some of the 76 lenses and cut off the 2 sides with a dremil . Filed the edge and sanded it and looked fine . I have sold a few and never had anyone say they noticed a difference between the 76 and 77 lense . But can't say for sure if there is any difference ? I have one that I could cut the 2 edges off and send to you if you haven't found one yet .
