Welcome to CO. Were you the guy I talked to at Homecoming that just got a W-31? Not sure of any balancers available at this time but you come to the right place to look for one.

Call Dick Miller Racing, he had 500 a few years ago. As I recall this was right before I started seeing more -31's for sale.

Thanks for the update on Miller's price. I remember him saying he was making a one time batch of 500 Dampers maybe that was the prepaid amount before production I was thinking of. I guess I'd pay it if I was cloning one.

Thank you all for your info. Extremely helpful. Now just trying to confirm the car is a W-31. Any tips?

Thanks again, I'm new to Olds.

Probably with out the POP, build sheet or broadcast sheet, you have a cutlass. If the trans is the correct type for a w31 and has a matching vin stamp you should be gtg as long as it's not a restored trans.

With out any of the above you have a barretjackson or eBay w31.... I.e. A cutlass

The car was purchased from Barret Jackson a few years back haha. So probably not a W31? I believe it was advertised as a W31 when the previous owner sold it.

lacking any documentation, its hard to get w31 money for the car, that said enjoy it and drive it thats where the real value is not chasing some $

and welcome to CO

Another possible but not guarantee is the distributor. A 70 W31 has a specific quadrajet carb number 7040255. If your car has that carb that's definitely part of the puzzle. An expensive piece too that can fetch up to $2,500. Lot of fakes. Welcome to CO!

I'd suggest posting some pictures of the car here. Most of us veterans know what cars went through the various B-J sale; authentic or not, we know a fair amount about them.

Question Real W-31

The W-31 automatic cars came with a T-350, not a T-400.

The W31 used the same distributor as the 310hp 350. #1111975.

Hi,
I am rebuilding a 1970 Oldsmobile cutlass W 31 engine to OEM spec and I am looking for a Harmonic Balancer I found the following one:
(PowerBond Harmonic Balancers PB1147N)
I have asked the manufacturer DAYCO if this one fits the W-31. He thankfully provided the following detailed feedback
Thank you for reaching out to Dayco Incorporated.

I was no able to identify any specifications for a balancer specific to the W-31. All 325 HP 350 CIB 5.7L motors of the 1970’s Took the PB1147N balancer. Again, with no references to the W-31 or the Dick Miller racing motors.

Specifications PB1147N

Description:

Premium OEM Replacement Balancer

Timing Marks: Y

Overall OD (in): 6.489

Nose OD (in): 1.997

Overall Width (in):3.189

Crank Bore (in): 1.499

Ring Width (in): 0.997

Bolt Holes: 4

Counterweight Balance: Hub weighted

Crank Trigger/Exciter Plate: N

Sincerely”

I would appreciate it if someone can advise if this one fits the purpose. If not then what Harmonic Balancer?

There has been one on FB recently for $2100. I've seen it several times but can't recall who it was.

Thanks, everyone, for the reference!

The option suggested by Joe Dornic is quite expensive compared to the PowerBond PB1147N, which is $138.99 on Summit Racing.

As a feasible alternative, I’m wondering if the PB1147N, or an equivalent option, would still work well for the stock 1970 W-31 engine. I’d be fine with a slight loss in horsepower or torque if it’s relevant.

Appreciate any insights!

I have a couple 70 350 factory balancers if you want an OEM option... (non W31)
They are the bigger ones...
I have one small one too...
PM me if interested

I can shoot you pics...

Dornik has the real deal...
Those balancers are not cheap and are rare!

Thanks for highlighting. It was a typo. I don't know how the word “Bolt” slipped in while typing😅.

Looking for any insights on my last query above

Thanks

Thanks for sharing! I’m still uncertain about the implications for my W-31 engine if I install a non-W-31 balancer, specifically a Rocket 350 balancer. How significant would this be for the engine’s reliability? Or it should be fine?

FWIW, when we initially were putting our '70 W31 car together to run in NHRA Stock Eliminator, I was concerned about the weight of the factory balancer as it relates to engine acceleration. I talked to the machinist that was building the engine and he said that as long as he balanced the engine with the balancer that we wanted to use, it wouldn't be a problem. I provided him with a much lighter factory balancer. The W31s were built on a separate assembly line and were what Oldsmobile called "select fit" engines, meaning that the individual parts (rods and pistons) were grouped by weight to be as close to a balanced assembly as was economically feasible We routinely revved our engine to 7,000 rpm without any mishaps, except for the factory rocker arm/fulcrum set-up not being able to withstand that too many times..

Those "Rocket 350 " balancers are hard to come by.
