1969 Hurst Olds Engine Parts

Hello:

Just purchased a 69 Hurst Olds (#466) and the immediate goal is to try and get the engine compartment looking like a 69 H/O should. Under the hood, there are lots of little things (and a few big things) that need attention.

The two biggest and most difficult needs we have, is to find a suitable repo 69 H/O Intake Manifold and an Air Cleaner "Top Hat". Our H/O is not a numbers matching show car, so we don't need one of the ultra rare original intake, just one that looks and operates correctly when mated to the proper air cleaner assembly. With respect to the "Top Hat", a repo would also be fine (we would prefer metal over fiberglass if at all possible), and if we could find a real poor but restorable condition original metal "Top Hat", that would be our first choice. Currently the car has an original 1970 W30 Ram Air Cleaner on it, so if someone needs one of those, it will be available once we receive the car (7 to 10 days from now).

Thanks in advance for any help or leads for these two parts.

Very best regards,
Michael

I have a 404521 "L" cast iron intake. This is for the '70 455, and has the same provision for the pcv valve in front of the carburetor. The hole is not machined; but is spot faced and easily opened up. Email me if interested: drolds1@bellsouth.net. Thanks, Bob.

Does it have the original chrome valve covers? I can possibly help you out with that if needed.

Hi Edzolz:

If the shipment is coming from the USA, the delivery address would be in Blaine WA 98230.

Hi Rocketman269V:

Thanks for the reply. Our first choice is to find one we can just bolt on and not do any extra machining, but because they are difficult to find, this maybe the only option. I will give it a couple of weeks to see if anything else shows up and then get back to you about it.

Sincerely,
Michael

Hi 70-442-W30:

Thanks for your reply. I am pretty sure that the chrome valve covers on the car are not original 69 H/O ones, so yes I would be interested in the set you have if you are willing to let them go to be used in a real H/O car. I will send you a Private Message so we can talk about it further.

Very best regards,
Michael

I have access to an excellent machine shop. Sadly, there was a member here that use to modify these to "appear" correct. He purchased a couple from me over the years. The only other concern is the actual fitting that presses into the opening, once it is machined. I believe that there is a detailed explanation of how to do this in an old thread. For outward appearance, a piece of steel tubing, with a brass ferrule on it is supposed to work just fine. Just something else to consider.

Hi Rocketman269V:

Thanks for the tip...I will try to find the thread and learn more about it. Question, does the 1970 442 iron intake for a manual transmission car already have the PVC nipple in it (407568)? ...and if so, what would be the other differences between the 407568 and the one you have available (404521)? Thank you for taking the time to educated me about it.

Sincerely,
Michael

While the 1970 intake has provisions for the PCV, it also uses a completely different choke. The '68-69 intake uses a divorced choke with the spring that sits in a pocket on the heat crossover. The '70 and up intakes use an integral choke with the hot air tube that bolts to the exhaust crossover. If you have any desire to use an original carburetor, the choke system will not adapt to the '70 intake

Thanks for noting that. I wasn't even thinking about the choke set-up. I guess that the ones that Chris modified were the 398662. Sorry for the confusion.

Great, I'll set them aside reserved for you until I hear otherwise.
