1968 442 31 spline axle needed

Awesome. Just dropped you an email. Is there a minimum thickness needed on the axel shaft beneath the bearing? The machinist that removed my old press in bearings said the driver's side was off by a 1000th and would likely fail with the new bearing??

Hey Rocketman, you said “the axle shaft diameter has to be sufficient to create a "press fit" for the inner bearing race. It is common for the early type "O" axle bearings to spin on the axle and wear a groove in it to where the bearing is loose.”
My question is, is it okay to live with that groove and the bearing being loose? —Billy

I think yes, it is fairly common for those early sealed bearings to spin on the shaft after so many years (I had that happen to mine). I don't think it is specific to O-Type rears; any that use a similar sealed bearing could be susceptible.
And no, it is not OK to drive with it like that. The axle shaft will move around and the oil seal will be distorted and leak oil, which can get into the brakes. Oily brakes make stopping difficult.
