1964 Dynamic 88 Holiday fuel tank
1964 Dynamic 88 Holiday fuel tank
Hello to the community. Reading through some of the posts looks like a great group of people with a lot of experience.
I am helping a friend with his 64 Dynamic 4 door. All original, 51k miles, always garage kept, and just a nice looking car. The car has been sitting for about 8 years and we seem to have most everything in a safe running order except for one topic. The fuel tank has a slight weep under the one of the straps. We have tried all around to find a replacement tank but have not had any good luck. Have also tried a large swap meets (Spring Carlisle) for sources, but also a no go. This tank does not lay flat under the trunk, rather it is stood up between the rear axle and the front wall of the trunk. It also has several contours to fit around the rear end and suspension components.
Would anyone have any sources that they could suggest for a replacement fuel tank for this car?
We have not started to remove the existing tank, but it looks like it will be interesting (filler neck looks to be a solid piece from rear fender to the tank). Factory service manual does not indicate any method of removal and I was wondering if anyone would be able to share their experiences with the tank removal.
Appreciate any information that can be offered. Thank you
Jeff

You wont find a repop that works. I may still have a good used one but not for sure. Expensive to ship due to size. Some bigger towns have a gastank renew company and will rework and seal a tank for a couple hundred bucks or so. Easiest is to use a lift but jacking up the rear a couple feet works as well. Only two straps to release, remove the sending unit wires and wiggle it down. Unless the straps are toast, 30 min job.
The Oldsmobile part number is 385293 , if you would like to try to find a NOS tank .
The Hollander says that 61 - 64 tanks will fit , but vent tank hookups and gas caps may not be the same .
Radiator repair shops may also repair gas tanks , inquire there .

Thank you deaddds. I am fortunate to have a lift so that should make it easier to remove. Glad it will be not too bad to remove - looking in there it looks like fun. Will check into the gas tank renewal services.
Update - Tank came out with little problems (only problem was strap bolts seized). Going to use the POR15 fuel tank sealer system as the metal looks in good shape inside the tank and no apparent rust through. Getting all new gaskets for sending unit. Also going to do a leak test to make sure we hopefully catch any problems. Would anybody have any other suggestions? Thank you.
You could be wasting your time sealing the tank if it is not cleaned properly first. I had mine sealed at a radiator shop and they dipped it in a caustic solution before sealing. I had no leaks, but if there had been, he would have soldered them before sealing. Cost $150.

Thank you for the updates. Found similar data on the 63/64 tank vs the 61/62 tank. Hopefully our repair holds up. Was a full procedure with cleaning and etching the tank interior. If we start to see leaks I will post that info, so that we all know what limitations there are with the POR and similar solutions.
