The 55 is not the same. The 54 was mounted in the trunk and has the ducts coming up from the package tray and into the headliner and blowing down on each side in the front and rear seat. The 55 was mounted on the left side of the firewall. The compressor, brackets and pulleys were probably the same. Either of those will be very difficult to piece together. The 4 groove crankshaft pulley and waterpump pulley are rare and expensive. I put air in my 54 convertible but it is underdash with a Sanden compressor. If you could find a parts car that would be your best bet. Good luck.

As redoldsman said, the A/C design changed in 55 to a front mount under dash system.
A quick scan of the Master Chassis Parts Book (section 9) shows some 53 A/C parts will fit a 54. Compressors and pulleys have different part numbers.

tailfins I wish you luck in finding one but the odds of finding one are maybe a little better than winning the lottery. Finding a parts car is the only way to do that since there are so many parts on the system. Then getting it to work would probably take a miracle. When I was getting ready to put AC in my 54 convertible there was a 55 parts car with AC for sale in St. Louis. I had a brief thought of buying it and putting the AC in my 54. It was a fleeting thought. I could have made up some cockomania story about it being the only 54 convertible with factory AC that was a late model made for a company executive. Good luck with your search.
