12 Bolt W-27 Cover

Only looking for an original 12 bolt W-27 cover or an NOS cover. I know, this is an incredibly rare piece. Not looking for reproduction covers at this time, please.

Thanks

Fred Mandrick (442Fred) had an NOS cover in Gettysburg last year. Not sure if he still has it.

Not to tease but I have a 12 bolt and a 10 bolt rearend cover but not sure if I am ready to part with them yet. Someone had one for sale here awhile back. I think it was 2K.

Just curious...…..how do you determine an original from a reproduction?

The early repops were pretty close to originals. The later ones don’t come close. The W in the casting is pointy instead of rounded. The flat surface of the casting is not machined flat like the originals. I believe there are other differences inside the cover as well but I can’t think of them at the moment.

I heard the the fella that that used to repop them stopped making them and then the off shore garbage started showing up.

You can search the site for additional threads on these covers. I know they have been discussed a bunch of times.

I don't want to muddy up the OP's original thread so I messaged you a couple of thread links.

Cool... it was a freebie that came on my '72 XGS 455 with an Olds Type "O" rear end. IIRC, its like a 2:57 open. Good for highway drives. ws

I don't think that there is a fuel tank in the factory photo.

That posting is bogus in at least two ways. First of all, there were no W-31s in 1971. Secondly, the w-31s came with an 8.5" type "O" rear with a 12-bolt cover and 10-bolt ring gear.

Wasnt the original W 27 an aluminum center pig with riveted steel tubes to it? Probably pretty rare for a reason. Bill
