70's polycast SS-IV wheels

Anyone interested in a set of four OEM oldsmobile SS-IV wheels?

These are the steel rims with a polycast molded onto the wheel. They are rare and was a pricy option back in the day.

Hello. What price range are you looking at for the rims? A friend has a '71 Delta 88 coupe that originally came with the polycast rims. A very similar rim was made by Rocket rims in '70, except the center cap was part of the mold and they did not have a trim ring. Thanks, Anthony

The Exiter was made by Motor Wheel, who went on to adapt and produce the SSIV design for Oldsmobile. (Small wonder as MW was a Lansing company.) MW's print ads for the Exiter show them on a 1969 442.

wsp, do you have the trim rings? They're hard to find in good shape.

SSIV really wake up any 71-76 B or C car. They especially change the whole demeanor of an 88 Holiday Sedan from sedate to sparkling.

Olds had a thing for an 8-vent wheel treatment and it looked good on their cars. First appearance was 64-65 bolt-on caps for 88-98-Starfire, then again in 68 for a high-line Cutlass full wheel cover. The SSIV was the last appearance of the design.

One of my Carlisle regrets is not purchasing a Mustang vendor's whole inventory of ten NOS 14x6 4.75 BC Exiters, complete except for centercaps, for ten bucks each. Had I been on the faithful servant Custom Cruiser I'd have had room for them all. As it was I was on that unlamented Bravada and had room for only four of them. The four are currently on my 1974 Hurst/Olds, using 80s FWD SSIII centercaps from a Ciera. They fit the Exiters perfectly, and if you want the earlier-style Rocket, repro SSI centercap decals fit like they were made for them.

You are correct, my error.

My brother-in-law had a set of Exciter wheels installed on his '70 twilight blue Cutlass "S" right after he bought it brand new. Actually ordered it with standard rims as he knew that was what he wanted.

Unfortunately, he only purchased four of them instead five for the spare, and later after an accident destroyed one, they had already stopped production. Never could find another one the correct size. They also had the unusual raised center hub that not many repair/tire shops could handle, since it was part of the casting.

I cannot count how many times in the 70's people would walk up to his car and ask him about the unusual rims. I've only seen them on one other car after all these years.

The advertisement I recall had a hooded "executioner" with a sledge hammer going to hit the wheel, which claimed to be undentable, not unlike the Pontiac endura bumper. Never saw the advertisement with the '69 Cutlass. Do you have copies of the advertisements?

If anyone has a set of 14"x7" Motor Exciter rims, my brother-in-law would surely be interested in purchasing them.

Thanks,
Anthony

Hi rocketraider. I don't have the trim rings for the wheels. The centers have no pitting. If the trim ring is same as the Exiter rims, the set online indicates that the repro rings for the Pontiac honeycomb rims will fit.

Hi Anthony. There is a set of 15x7 Exiter rims on eBay.

I could be interested in your wheels. I know the bolt pattern is 5x5, but do you know if the dish is right for a 65 Delta 88? That's what I would like to put them on. Thanks!

Thank you for the information.

Who would have ever thought Motor Wheel Exiter wheels would ever go for $1900 a set. Did you see the '70 GM Emergency Kit still in the original box for sale? This eBay store has MANY very rare and nos & period correct accessary parts for sale for every make and model. Just amazed looking at the items for sale and wondering where they found this stuff.

We still have not seen a set go for $1900. That is an asking price. His prices are pretty steep and I doubt they will see for anywhere near that amount.

$1900 seems awful steep for a set of rims. Especially when you can spend less than that for a set of aftermarket wheels. These wheels are definitely awsome though. If I ever ran across a set locally I would have to jump on them like a rat on a cheeto!

Once again, don't confuse asking price with selling price. He could have set the B.I.N. price at $1M - it doesn't make that what the wheels are worth. On the other hand, you can't compare the prices of currently available aftermarket rims with long out of production factory rims. That's like saying that an aluminum Edelbrock intake is only $200, so W-30 intakes can't be worth ten times that.

I'm very interested if anyone can confirm that trim rings from the Honeycomb wheels fit SS-IVs.

It's just the way I think. I made a similar comment on a different post not too long ago:

Bolt pattern aside, I always thought the Olds SSIVs looked nicer than the Exciters, what with the chrome centers.

As for the exhorbitant price, who knows, someday $1900 may sound reasonable. Ron Memmer had a set of perfect 1965 N98 chrome rims at the 2000 OCA Nats, and I recall the price being $1000. Seemed like a lot of money THEN, haw haw! Seriously, for someone who simply HAS to have a set, that doesnt sound so crazy. Anymore.

I checked the rims out further and these are actually 15x6 and not 15x7 that I originally thought. I need to pull the rims out of the garage and clean them up to take better pictures. I also have someone local that is very interested as well. I will update this post when these rims sell. Thanks for everyone's interest. I have other Oldsmobile "stuff" that I will be posting either here or on eBay.

The trim rings are not the same as the Pontiac Honeycomb, and the Pontiac guys have just as much trouble finding good ones for those as we do for the SSIV. That said, the Honeycomb rings will probably fit the SSIV. Seems like I've heard somewhere Honeycomb rings are reproduced, but I can't say for sure.

SSIV and 77-79 N82 Custom Chrome Wheel use the same trim ring. Doesn't make them any easier to find.

If you can't find the correct trim ring, GM pickups from around 88-95 used a stainless trim ring that will fit and look reasonably correct. What you have to look out for is where the ring meets the outer edge of the polycast- the trim ring's profile has to be nearly vertical with no slope to fit in there.

Ford offered Polycasts on 77-79 Thunderbird/Cougar/LTD II and they use a very narrow trim ring that clips onto the edge of the steel rim. Those rings will also work, you'll just see the opening between the steel rim and the polycast.

Take a look at some of the stuff this guy sells. I think his prices are way out there and does a lot of fishing if you know what I mean.

The auction for those wheels were posted already in this thread, several posts back (July 14 of last year); they are 4.75 bold circle, not 5", and would fit Cutlii rather than the big cars.

I recently saw a set of these wheels on an 1961 Starfire and they looked awesome. If I ever run across a set in my price range, which isn't very likely, I am going to get them. Unfortunately, LOL, even if I do get a set of these beautul wheels, I don't have anything to put them on.

What's funny is if you scroll up and look at one poster's pics you will see the last pic is from a flyer/brochure showing one of the wheels mounted on a W30 car! Wonder if they decided not to produce them in the Abody bolt pattern.

The set of Exiters I have on me Hurst are 4.75 BC. Aftermarket companies usually made their wheels in small and large GM as well as Ford/Chrysler bolt patterns.

Advertising them on an Olds A-body tells me MW had something cooking with Olds when they designed these. Oldsmobile used that 8-vent wheel design a lot- see the 64-65 N93 and 68 Cutlass PO1.

Still shoulda bought all the Exiters the Mustang guy had. I'll never run up on another deal like that in my lifetime. Damn skimpy-*** Bravada...

If anyone comes across a good set of Exiter wheels, or even single wheels, please let me know. Sorry, did not mean to hijack the thread.
