I have a bunch of sets of red wells. The quality is variable, but with some time and effort all sets are usable. Most average sets run from $800-1500, while the nicer ones are 1500-3.5K. These are expensive to ship and I won't take them back. Consider that it may take from 10-50 hours to restore these, so what are you paying a shop to restore ? Located in NJ, and I prefer u come and take a look before purchase. Some people are looking for perfection where it does not exist. Find and buy nos ones.. which I hear are over 6K, if you can find any. and if the question is "how much for your best ones?" 3.5K. Examples of sets below, where I match up color/quality. If you have no means to pick these up or pay.. please don't ask for pics and prices. I also have a few black sets. Pm me.

Saddest part is all those W cars that gave up the ghost.

 

Not true.. a lot of guys don't know or care, and just buy repops. They're red and clean.. saves time and money.

 

Impressive collection! My "black wells" are shiny, but I promise they are "original"

 

My red wells are faded, but original. I'd rather have faded originals than new aftermarket.

Back in the day Joe Mondello got from GM Olds a pallet of F heads as I was told bye nim years ago. Yes that is a lot of red wells for one person. We have a guy in our Nor Cal Old club has 50 57 Olds cars not selling any thing yet..

 

Well we all need parts for these cars.. any trades for any 70-72 parts welcome.

 

A few nice sets sold.. plenty more, just need some elbow grease and some repairs.

Someone had sprayed a urethane clear over them. The hardest part was getting that off (lots of steel wool soaked in lacquer thinner). With most of the clear off, I wet sanded them (600 to 1000 to 1200) and then sprayed them with a coat of matte clear to even out the finish. Looks a little better in the pic than in person, but only because there are some different tones in the red plastic where it faded over the years. I cleaned off a coat of black paint from the underside but left the aged faded pink color because these are for my faux-tina project. The car looks restored under the hood and in the interior, but on the outside the paint is dull and rubbed through to red primer in places. (driver door not yet painted in pic above)

I started sanding mine awhile ago. It's an unbelievable amount of work. Had to walk away from it quite a few times. I know what you mean about the color variations. I wondered if they can be dyed. But I don't think the plastic will take.

This is the 1971 w30 that i started working on. I am looking to replace 1 black fenderwell with a red one.
The car was in a few accidents and the repair shop must have put on a different Fender and black inner fenderwell.

Guys, this is a maybe work idea. The other day, I was watching a motorcycle restoration show when this guy took out a propane torch and applied flame to this, I think 3 wheeler red Honda trike, all faded to pink. As he heated up the body of the trike, it soon started to turn bright red. When he finished, total bike look 20 years newer. I don't know if the plastic is the same but if it is, this could be a quick fix for marginal finder liners. If ant one ha a destroyed liner, give it a shot and report back to the group.. Tedd

 

Yes, heat does enhance the color of the red liners; however, it is not a cure-all approach.
