According to the 1970 color chip chart, there was no "cardinal red," just "matador red," #75, as you say (near the bottom in the right-most column). You should get a copy of this chip chart and take it with you to the paint shops. Show them exactly what you want and what your source is for the name and number of the color.

For all we know, cardinal red and matador red will turn out to be the same thing, and cardinal red was the name in a different model year. But this chart shows what you need.

From that site, it looks like what the name was depended on the division. Pontiac called it cardinal red, Chevy called it cranberry red, etc.

Here's the 1970 Chevy paint chip chart. Note that color 75, cranberry red, has the same code, 2189, as the Oldsmobile matador red.

That's correct. For example, Sebring Yellow was called Saturn Yellow by Buick and Daytona Yellow by Chevy. Same color, same paint formula.

Excellent post, 2x on CA LAWS (forgot to add taxes also). What store in NV are you buying from? I would like to do the same when I get ready to paint.

martin auto color in sparks, there prices are pretty much half the price, Omni junk in the bay area for code 75 is around $83-88 per qt, real PPG for code 75 is $51 per qt there, that's not including the savings on reducer, goodluck
