66 Target Red

Was at a car show tonight and there was a 66 GTO with Montero Red paint which is supposed to be the same color as Olds Target Red yet it looked very different to me. The Montero Red had a deeper red color, sort of blood red color. My Cutlass is Target Red but it looks more of a fire engine type red to me but I've seen other Target Red Cutlasses that look like the GTO color.

What is going on here? I love that deep blood red color that I saw on the GTO but confused by the differences I've seen. Anyone have any insight into this? This is paint code R btw.

Target Red

I just had my 66 painted Target Red .It took 2 coats of Black base to bring out the darker Blood Red.

I have a 66 with original R paint and it is bright red, not dark.

Yeah Rund that's my point. If you go to this sight and search Montero Red or Target Red you get the same paint code from GM yet looking at the pics it clearly shows two different shades. I'm just confused by this as I prefer to have the more deep blood red color when I repaint.

I have vintage color charts from Ditzler/PPG and from DuPont. The former shows bright red, like my car. The latter shows a darker red for the same Target Red, code R.

Auto Color Library shows them to be the same. I always thought that Montero red was darker..so much for that!

I mix paint at work and i can tell you from one brand to another they are very different. You mix the best omni plus and go to the ppg dbc or dbu the colors do not match. we have guys that try to repair a panel and complain because the cheap stuff don't look the same. And when you mix the cheap stuff half the can is mixing clear so the paint does not cover as good. Mix the ppg its almost all paint little to no clear added. I mixed red for mine in samples and there was a day and night difference in the red i was going to use.

It took the body shop doing my car four different times before they matched the red. The first time they used the PPG paint code for 68 Scarlet. It looked pink. Then they tried Matador Red which was supposed to cross to Scarlet (not even close). Then they brought a portable scanner to the shop and after two tries they got a perfect match the existing paint under the pinch weld and on the doors.

I used PPG dbu & it covered great and the color is right on. The body shop that did my car was used to working with cheap stuff (PPG shop line) & it took them a few tries to get it right but I'm generally happy with the final result

Reds vary from depending on what plant they came out of or brand of paint they used too

So I'm not crazy. Both those colors are listed as 71472 yet they can be two totally different colors when seen in person. The GTO was beautiful in that deep red color. I have also seen Olds in Target Red look like the GTO but my Target Red is not the same. I'm not sure why this is and it looks like most here have run into the same problem. I guess I'm sol.

You can get the paint supplier to match a given color chip or you can look through the chips they have and pick one. They can computer match your paint.
