What the pros and cons of 39 vs 45 degree lifter bank angles?.

Roger, I am not a cam expert like many folks here are. All I know is that Oldsmobile had 2 different type of big block engines, a standard 39 degree cam bank angle (CBA) and a 45 degree CBA back in the day. Camshafts do not interchange between these 2 motors. My 66 442 with a 400E motor has a 39 degree cam bank angle. There is a tremendous amount of information written about the Olds CBA.. Below is just a small excerpt taken from the Oldsmobile FAQ...

Oldsmobile engines from 1964 onward originally used a 45 degree cam bank angle (CBA) and corresponding 0.842" diameter lifters. This angle is formed by the intersection between the cam centerline and perpendicular lifter centerline. By 1968, all Olds engines were using a 39 degree CBA and corresponding 0.842" diameter lifters. In the years between, 39 degree CBAs (and corresponding 0.921" diameter lifters) were used mainly on blocks found in models with premium engines, like Toronado's, 442's and Starfires. 45 degrees was being used everywhere else. The CBA also affects the pushrod hole angle in the heads.

I thought hen I first looked at your post it was referring to some oddball cylinder angle casting I'd never heard of. Lancia made narrow angle V4 engines for a long time.

That should be 1964-1967 as in 1968-onward all of the Olds V-8 blocks were 39º CBA - you even posted that in the info you copied for Roger.
