Parting Out 1971 Cutlass S
This one was dropped off at the house yesterday. It runs and drives but the the body is really rough. I think it has a 1973 455ci motor with the J heads. Nothing really great but it's a still running/driving 455ci.
Front Disc brakes $250.00 Sold
Bucket seats $500.00 Sold
Rear seat $75.00
AM/FM Radio $70.00 Sold
Dash Pad $195.00
Center Console $200.00 (the lid hinge is broken) Sold
More pictures to follow. I'll post them in the coming weeks as I take the car apart. I need to make some space for it in the warehouse before I can really tear into it.
The car is located in Birmingham, Alabama.
Shipping large parts can be done via Fastenal. (Buyer to arrange)

Sure it's a '71 S? Looks like '72 grills and taillights, and the gravel guard emblem is a rocket instead of an S. The grills may also indicate a '72 core support?
The aircleaner looks similar to one I saw in another thread here questioning whether it was a homebrew or factory something.

Easy way to tell if the cosmetics prove it to be a 72. Look at the VIN. If it starts out as 3G87 it's a 72. A 71 will start 33687
The fan shroud is not original, and that air cleaner is not from an olds. The SMT cars that had the dual snorkel had a different size side snorkel. This is how it would look, I own this one.

If that car was up here in Michigan, I can tell you it probably would have been restored. You should see the "projects" that people drag home around here. Floors rusted out, no dash in them, core support rotted out. This cutlass looks pretty solid, it was a good find.

From what I see it's a '72. Horn relay on firewall, '72 steering wheel, yellow seat belt wire behind pass bucket, probably says fasten seat belt in bottom of fuel gauge but like Allan said, the VIN will tell the tale.

I love this forum! I am always learning from you guys.
The VIN: 3G87H2R#### So it's a 1972
I noticed the fan shroud when I bought it. I wonder what its' from?
The Air Breather is from a Grand Prix. The seller told me this and I just confirmed it by looking at pictures on the internet.
The floor has already been replaced. The car is restorable. Buy it now and I'll hold it for up to three weeks giving the buyer plenty of time to arrange shipping or to pick it up in person. $2700.00
I won't have time to remove anything from it until next week. (exception: radio and center console will come out ASAP)
I will be checking the radio out ASAP to see if it works then I am sure one of you will be getting it. I'll do this in the morning. Real busy right now with internet stuff and shipping a pallet out today.
Larry,
You need the center upper dash vent? I have one already out of a car. $20.00 plus shipping. This is for the vent and the plastic duct right behind the vent.

Tom,
The car should be a 2bbl 350, produced in Arlington according to the VIN. One of 78,461 produced in 1972.
As Scott noted, there are other differences between 71 and 72 that are way too long to list out here.
I'd bet the shroud is from a newer model car. Not much value to it since it's also been worn through at the top. Looks like someone did recent upgrade to the brake booster and master cylinder even though they're not OEM style.

But that's probably one of the many reasons I was able to get it at a fair price.
Down here everyone thinks these cars are worth a mint and they usually ask way to much for them, as was the case with this car. The original asking price was $3500. I was lucky and the seller both knew me, and needed the cash, so he came down on the price drastically.
I drove it yesterday around the neighborhood. It's really not all that bad. But there really isn't anything unique about it either.

The front clip of a 70 is quite a bit different than a 71/72. The radiator support, grill mounts, headlights, bumpers, braces etc are all different. 71/72 went to a simpler design especially getting rid of that stupid hood tooth that was a head banger on 69/70 models. The only parts on the front of the 70 that are really interchangeable with 71/72 are the fenders, wheel opening moldings, and side marker lights.

Please put in line for the am/fm radio.
Is the am/fm radio a mono or stereo model? I believe 1972 was the first year Oldsmobile offered a monaural version of the am/fm radio in the A-body.
This was probably done to lower the cost of the am/fm radio, which was quite expensive at the time in the stereophonic version. Probably also why you see so many 70/71 cars with either an am monaural radio, am w/rear speaker radio, or an am radio w/tape deck.

Thanks Allan, did not know the mono am/fm was available in 1969. I'm guessing the cost difference between the mono and stereo am/fm radio that year was also very high.
Was the mono am/fm available in 1970 or 1971? I did not see it listed anywhere as an option.
It would be strange if they offered the mono am/fm radio in 1969, but then did not offer it again until 1972.

I know. It sounds wierd to me too. I did check the options list for 70/71 and can see the U58 option listed both years, but no mention of the mono AM/FM. Could be they didn't offer it because the 70/71 AM/FM units had the additional multiplex unit that was mounted up behind the dash? That's my best guess anyway. I looked at the SPECS guides and Inspector guides for both years and na da.

I guess it is another one of those '72 model year quirks that were done for that one "hold over" year because of the 1971 strike.
Some of the parts changes Oldsmobile made for the '72 model, especially the design changes which could had been held over from the 1971 model year so as to avoid these one year only tooling or stamping updates while gearing up for the completely new '73 models, never ceases to amaze me:
Radiator support "humps" for the taller '72 grilles. Designers could had just made the grilles the same height as the '71 grilles.
Monophonic AM/FM radio for 1972. Could had waited for the '73 model to offer this option.
White interior instead of Pearl. This might have been due to manufacture's color availability, but does not seem likely.
A gloss sheen vinyl top instead of the '71 satin vinyl top. This might also had been due to manufacture's material availability, but does not seem likely.

Actually Anthony, those 'bumps' on the rad support aren't because the grills are 'taller'. If you measure them for height they're exactly the same as 71. The reason for those bumps is because the grills were set forward instead of recessed like 71. Easy thing to compare - look at the 72 442 grills. They're identical to 71 in sizing and fit exactly the same. Any 71 grill will fit in a 72 rad support, but only the 72 442 grill will fit in the 71 rad support. Anywho, doesn't really matter now - just a point of clarification. There are a couple threads on this site that compare the differences between 71 and 72 so I'm not going to re=hash them here.

I just moved it into the warehouse. I actually drove it the eight miles from my house to the warehouse with no plates and no mechanical issues. I'll start taking it apart later in the week.
