look at the picture on that auction of the 70 stamp from what I have heard that is one way of telling, though I have not examined a repo.
I know these are valuable and I know there is a market for NOS stuff, but as many here like me, I feel its only NOS until you put it on your car.
I had an extra one of these sitting in my garage for 15-20 years, I finally traded it with John on the list. We each had valuable parts that each other wanted. On any given day we probably would have made a killing selling our parts on ebay, but the beauty of this and other olds fourms is we can get rare or just needed parts without using money and it usually very fair.

by the way I have seen a few of these lately on ebay hovering around 1k, but even with this one being NOS then you either have to buy the vacuum actuator as a repo or try to find that NOS too. Point is these things are out there and I have seen them for 500 or so a few times as well no need to spend 1800 on NOS

That's a beautiful unit. It'll be interesting to see if it sells. Remember, good original flapper doors don't exactly grow on trees, either.
Incidentally, the unit being sold was molded the first week of December, 1970, and thus would be incorrect for a 1970 model year car or early 1971 model year car. I wouldn't put it on a 1972 car or even a late-build 1971. Most people wouldn't care, but if I was paying $1800 for it, I'd want the date code to be "right" for my car.

Just so you know,The Parts Place is selling ones with the date & casting number in them, just like the originals.Incase that helps anyone.
All of the real ones I have ever had, which is a lot,had "70" cast into them.Even the ones from my 71 & 72 cars.

For example, on my 1970 442, built in October of '69, the air dam (under the radiator) has a "69" code with dots stamped around it indicating August or September of '69. However, there's also a "68" code with all its dots and a "70" code with no dots. So you can see that the mold was used for the 1968 calendar year, through '69 to when my car was built, and was planned on being used in the 1970 calendar year.

Yes,I know what you are saying. If the same part was used for different years, and it was not redesigned or changed, then it has the year that it was originally made, cast into it.All of the OAI tops/flappers that I have had,all had the same casting number and "70" on them.
I have seen various parts, like the airdams, that have more than one year cast into them.I think I have seen the dashes like that too.
Something like the driver's side fenderwells might be different, since they added that 3rd bump for the cruise control.I'll check next time.they have just kept the same number, and added the 3rd bump,or changed the number too.Techinically the 70 ds red well, and the 71 ds red fenderwell are each 1-year only pieces,if you want to get that specific.

Here's a few of an original unit I bought off evil bay a few months back. and except for the vaccuum motor it's never been painted/restored. I believe it those are the original hoses on it - the flapper hose has a very narrow white stripe on it (narrower than what I 've seen in the repo kits)

There are rollers for pinstriping, that you can use with a white ink,to duplicate the correct width of stripe on the hoses.Again,if you want to get that picky with it.I have plenty of original hoses in excellent condition, that i use for references, and some may be reinstalled on my cars.
Stick a thin metal dowel rod through the hose,to keep it straight & flat, and roll the stripe on it.That's one way.

One of the small rubber rollers, with a small amount of paint, will only lay the paint the the raised areas. You might want to wet-sand the tops of the letters prior to painting,to make sure they are nice & flat.Any small casting burr will bump the roller up,and therefore,it won't coat the letter.

Not long ago (within the last two years)I sold a '70 442 that had a REAL hood and REAL O.A.I. breather. The breather was not on the car when the buyer and I agreed on a price. My conscience wouldn't let me keep the O.A.I. parts and I put them in the trunk. The G.M. box for the top of the breather was still intact (must have been a replacement) but was a little shoddy. If I had to do it all over again I would STILL give the buyer the parts---that is how I do business. "Money is not the root of my evils." I sleep good every night because of it. Until nevt time..... Dave,
I would do the same thing. When I sell a car,I make it as complete as possible, sometimes buying additional parts to complete it,or make it more attractive, and not change the final price of the car.If I have it,it goes with the car.I see some poeple nitpick pieces off the car,to resell later, and I'm just not like that.
Yes,that would be H&H Classic selling that.

thanks all for posting some pictures The one for sale, looks different in my opinion than once here and I have seen on cars and at swaps there isn't that deep black plastic color and and that luster. good info and pics for reference..anyways thanks

One flapper motor was black but looked like it was spray painted the other was natural (maybe cadmium?)
Also one had "OLDSMOBILE" painted white the other not. But the painted one had the unpainted motor IIRC. I have heard some dealers painted the letters white and many owners did but not the factory. I see way more unpainted then painted

Brian, could you point me to a source for the paint roller you think I'd need for the OAI top lettering? Thanks!!!

shucks, if the box had a 1970 date on it or even a late 69 I'd bid on it
What color were they I have no idea, I have a couple that look just like that but are blue - wonder how old they are - i don't think they have words embossed on them though

White filter will set you back about $100.00, and the embossing on the bottom will cost you an aditional $195.00.

X2 i have a blue one also.

The reason I ask is that my OAI adapter has the same date code stamping as yours, with a few faint line stamped between the 12 thicker spokes of the wagon wheel. It's easy to interpret the dots shown on the eBay unit, but I'm not sure whether those faint lines are supposed to designate months or if they were just defects in the original mold.
