Lard Tunderin Jaysus n Mary! I just looked at some archive pics when I did my tank. I test fitted it shiny side down, and installed it shiny side up!

Alan - Functionally, it should not matter. From what I've seen and had my hands on while pulling tanks,my own cars, being in salvage yards, etc, the factory installed these with the shiny side facing down - thus my comment above.

Now that I have my fuel tank installed, I am trying to remember where the ground for the sending unit gets connected to the body. I did POR15 on the underside of the trunk area and must have filled in the location. Thank you.

You can ground it pretty much anywhere you want, just make sure the surface is clean. After drilling and screwing in the ground, you can coat it with undercoat or paint to protect against corrosion. The original location of the ground is towards the right front of the upright section on the passenger footwell IIRC.
Hint: stretch the wire loosely forward and then move it to the drivers side to see if you can find the hole the ground originally was in. Some of these replacement ground straps are quite a bit shorter than the OEM ones though.

Allan thank you for the quick reply. The tank and sending unit is a Spectra, made in Canada. Seems like they are often used for replacements. I will check tomorrow the location that you mentioned. I still have the old sending unit so I can check the difference in the length of the ground wire. I forgot to mention that this is a 71 Cutlass S. I installed new tank, sending unit, three vent lines, tank straps, tank strap hardware, and of course the tank pad that I purchased from Patton.

We're getting a little off Pattons topic so this will be quick.
The tank you want from Spectra is the GM34R, same as my 72. I kept the old sending unit ground and attached/soldered it to the new one from ILT. I found the new sender wire was shorter and also came off the sender 180º off where it should, thus shortening the wire even more. I'll look for your build thread on your car and we can carry on from there.

Some people don't think very far ahead. Within a few months of when you run out or otherwise quit selling them, we will hear whining. They aren't expensive, but are a significant part for safety (prevent the sheet metal tank from getting rubbed and squirming around) as well as appearance. Patton, I know you will custom cut to fit other models and I think "everyone" should have at least one!
That's why I bought a handful from Patton several years ago
when he first started selling them.
I figured he would be sold out long before now.
Very pleased. Damn good price for a good quality item.
One of the few aftermarket items I've bought that's
better than original equipment.
Patton is a good guy to deal with. Knows his stuff.

Does anyone know why the gas tank pad was discontinued shortly after the 1970 model year? Was something else used between the gas tank and trunk floor, or did GM/Fisher determine nothing was needed between the top of the gas tank and trunk floor?

I sell New Gas Tank Pads for 64-72 GM A-body cars. These pads/insulators were installed on top of the gas tank as an anti-rattle/insulator on cars up through 1970. It appears that GM stopped using them on some or all A-bodies after 1970 but the pads will work fine on the post-70 cars. I can also make these in other sizes so ask if you have something other than an A-body (Cutlass/442/Skylark/GS/Tempest/Lemans/GTO/Chevelle/Malibu).
My pads are a nice thick material, very similar to the original...however, they won't crack and crumble like the original material tends to do.
Price is $25 each + shipping
