The stock rear for 72 Skylark would have been an 8.5” GM corporate.

That might not be correct. I know Buick used the 8.2 longer than other models. The later 8.2 used in Buicks has a goofy bearing setup that used a laeger bearing on one side. I believe even the gears are different for tht unit.

I have been into Buicks for about as long as you have been into Olds. 1968-70 A body Buicks used a Buick only 8.2 gearset. A 8.2 BOP gearset for Buick A bodies ended in the 67 model year. It is not the same and will not interchange with 1968-70 Buick only 8.2. Beginning with the 71 model year Buick A bodies went to the 8.5 GM corporate rear. It is possible that someone swapped in a pre 68 rear into a 72. But, if you look at the date codes and part numbers, I think you find that it did not leave the factory that way in 71-72.

I may be the only Olds guy other than Monaz and you that knew Buick used the 8.2 later than the other brands and it had different gears/posi and bearings. I just didn't know exactly how far Buick used that goofy setup.

The 1971 1972 " BUICK " Corporate 8.5 have a 2 inch tall LETTER A cast into top and front sides of the center section. (partially covered by the brake hose in pics)
