Sport Mirrors Mounting

Are the mirrors attached to the (outer) door skins with the brace style (bar) or is their a plate welded on the inside the door skin. I have heard both methods used.....
Thanks in advance!

I have plenty of original 70 sport mirror doors, and I don't ever remember seeing one of those reinforcement braces on the inside.it might be an Inline Tube invention.Either way,it's a good idea.

I have 3 sets of these I've pulled off original doors and have never seen any special bracing either.

71-72 sport mirrors use the brace. 70 use studs and a plate inside the door.

The brace that we are discussing,is supposed to go inside the door. The studs from the mirrors are supposed to pass through the door, through the brace, then fastened with the nuts. From what we have seen, there was no reinforcment brace. The stud simply passed through the doorskin, and fastened with a nut on the backside.
The 71-72 mirrors are surface-mounted.Two screws fasten the plate to the doorskin, then a single screw fastens & locks the mirror body to the plate.

Gotcha. I haven't seen a brace like that on a door yet either. I have seen them listed for sale and thought about adding them.

Are these 2 seperate pieces on the mirror, being the base and the clam shell portion, i have a great set except the base is broke, so I was wondering if i can just find replacements for the base or what i can do to fix it.

They do come apart although I've never done it. Put up a want ad for just the base piece you need, maybe you'll find one with a smashed upper part?

I have a base. Let's exchange PMs so I can send you pictures to ensure it'll work.
