Smile 1969 400 G Block - Burton, MI

Engine has been SOLD!!
For sale 1969 Olds 400G block (396026G) w/less than 100K miles. It has been trouble-free and has run flawlessly on pump gas since I purchased the car in 1971. I removed it from my 1966 442 this past December 2017. I do not know the complete history on this engine, but this is what I do know.
  • Block ID#: 396026G (not 442)
  • Heads ID: C-big valve, heads milled and decked, 3-angle valve job, new valves, springs, and guides (Installed 1985). Was told compression should be around 9.5:1
  • Camshaft: Crane Fireball Cam, 288° duration, .474/.474 lift, new lifters (Installed 1985)
  • Timing Chain: Sealed Power (installed 1985)
  • Intake manifold ID#: 390390 (1966 & 1967 400/425 Including 4V W-30.)
  • Carb ID#: 7026250 (1966 400/425 will need a rebuild as it has sat for a long time)
  • Crankshaft: should be nodular & was drilled for manual transmission.
  • Distributor: Non HEI, I am guessing 1969 as it was in the car when I got it. Includes wires & plugs
  • Coil: Accel Super Coil
  • Includes: factory flywheel (good shape), bell housing (1966 442), competition pressure plate (stiff) & clutch disc, and “newer” starter … all in good shape.
  • I have removed the intake for inspection, clean w/no corrosion in the water passages
  • $800 or BO
This engine is no longer needed as I just completed an engine swap with a period correct 400 E block a few weeks ago. Engine is strapped to a pallet and will be crated so it is ready to ship or for pickup. You must make all shipping arrangements from my commercial establishment (with a forklift) in Burton, MI 48519.

Just out of curiosity how do you know it’s not from a 442?

I would assume the 1969 400 G block in the 442 had 10.25:1 compression & 290 HP, this is a low compression block...

... or maybe it was 350hp...??

I am sure somebody here will know that for sure... I am a little confused why this motor was drilled for a manual transmission, when it could have been in a vista cruiser...Hmmmm

If the crank was originally drilled for a MT it was most certainly from a 442 although there's the outside chance it could have been a MT vista. I'm more familiar with 68's so I can't tell you for sure. In 68 you could get a 4 bbl 400G in a Vista which was the same as the High Compression 442 motor (not dished pistons and big valve C heads).

was there a factory low compression piston for a 400 in '69?
many things could've been changed/modified when installed with a 4-speed in '71

what's the partial VIN stamping on the block?

Next week when I am at my shop I will try and get that off the block. Last I looked it was almost unreadable...

A little bit more on the MT crank. Though certainly not common you could find a manual crank in an automatic car, I have had three such instances over the years with Untouched OEM original factory cars. Two were cutlass's and one 442. As such it could find it's way into a Vista possibly. The wagon(vista) in 68-69 , if ordered with the 400, you received the EXACT same engine as would have been in the 442.
