Brian, the intake looks like a 1965 as its a square bore. That was 1965 only for the big blocks & would have had a 4 jet carburetor. The 1966 & newer would have spread bore intakes with quadrajets. Also could you add one photo of the back end of the crank showing the pilot bushing? John

One more thing... if you would post the Julian date of the castings, block & heads that might help people match this to a car they may have missing the correct engine.

Is there a way to determine if an E Block is 66 or 67?

I agree that the intake appears to be '65. Provide casting #?

The block has that date thing near the dist'r hole. Allegedly it goes like this:
1
359

would be #1 **calendar year** of production for this type of block: e.g., 1967 for the model year 1968+ "F-455" blocks, 1965 for the '66-'67 model year E-400 blocks. Therefore "2" on an E400 would be cast in 1966, and "3" in 1967, and none after that.

The "359" could be digits from 1 to 365 [or 366 in a leap year]. None of '65, '66, or '67 were leap years. In this example it would be day #359 of 1965... an unrealistic example perhaps, because Day 359 is usually Christmas Day, and folks are probably not casting blocks on that day.

So, assuming that model year changeover occurs around day 210, and assuming that an engine block would be cast no closer to use than say 30 days....

1966 Model year cars would have blocks cast
1- from ealiest to 365, and then
2- from 1 thru 180 [or so, based on ASSUMPTIONS above]

1967 Model cars would then have blocks cast from
2-181 [or so...] thru
3-180 or whenever they stopped making E blocks.
