It's a non numbered second design unit. Only the shrouds done by Demmer were numbered. There were shrouds numbered up to 98 or 99 but none in the 100's that's known.

Yes,that's correct. Only the Demmer built units were hand stamped and numbered. Theory has it that the GM vendor used for air cleaners did the second units.

Then you also know that the numbered shrouds were about 1/4 inch too shallow. Paper element air cleaners don't fit and the factory had to use a press to squash the screens a bit so they would go in, to use the foam air filters. Also you can tell from the pictures at the top that there are 4 screws in front, and 4 in back. The hand-massaged early shrouds had 5 and 5.

At what point in history was this supposed to happen and why didn't it actually happen?

This was going to happen in 1998. Jim Stohlman and others didn't want it around so as any effort to reproduce them could devalue real cars.

The best way to shorten/squash/squish/beat down etc. is to use a bead roller. When you run a bead in the middle of the screen,it shortens it, Makes for a neat clean job unlike the ones you beat down with a 2x4 and a hammer. Thanks Dad for the tutorial anyway.

  • Unfortunately buying is not a option but just want to say how cool this is. You all need to write a book with all of this info for those of us who want to learn about these cars, for me there is nothing cooler then a 66 w-30.

Inflation. LOL. Seriously, I actually have 2 of these shrouds and have had 6 previously. I know of a sale of a shroud a few years ago that was $10K. I just hope somebody can use them for their cars.

I purchased my 66 W30 setup, air cleaner, carbs and intake for $125 back in 1983... At the time I wasn't even aware of what I actually purchased until I started to do some research... Obviously, the seller wasn't aware as well...

I need to get all the stuff to do my 67. I have a couple shrouds, some original but not awesome hoses, and a set of original, and a set of accurate repro ducts for the 67. Need to look through Curt's catalog again and get all the wires, clamps, hold downs, vent tubes, etc.
