1965 442 4 spd Frame (Back on the Market)
1965 442 4 spd Frame (Back on the Market)
Back on the market again Hi All, I had taken a deposit on this frame but life changed for the buyer and he no longer wants to buy it. So... back on the market again. I've got it stripped down to a bare frame, if anybody has any questions about it let me know.Back on the market again
Several years ago I dismantled a F85 with a manual transmission, 3 on the tree. The frame used under manual transmission cars in 1965 were the same as used under 442's. I'm in the process of stripping off the rolling chassis to make it store easier/take up less room. Better yet, if anybody out there needs one of these its available. Frame looks solid but the downside is a previous owner welded brackets to use chevy motor mounts. Those would have to be cut off. But attached are a few photos, let me know if there's any areas or closeups you'd like to see. I'd like $500 for the bare frame. I'll strap it to a pallet and take it to a shipping depot if the buyer requests. John

thx for the pics. Question i have is if 64 cutlass manual trans cars shared the same design differences like the 65 442 frames you mention above.
can i replace my rusty 64 442 frame with a basic rust free 64 or 65 regular cutlass frame and have it look correct by just welding the Z bar bracket on ?

I don't know if they share the same characteristics. But I do have a 1964 Cutlass factory 4 speed project car. I can check the frame on that to see what it looks like. John

Well I just learned something new. I crawled under the 1964 4 speed car and found the frame has the same details that the 1965 4 speed frame has. The extra gussets on the engine crossmember, one piece side frame rails, and the 4 bolt holes for the rear upper control arms. The possibility hadn't even been on my radar screen. So it looks like you need a 4 speed frame to correctly match your 442 frame. I don't have time right now, but will get some Emory cloth and look for the number stamped into the drivers side rear frame portions to see if it matches the 1965 number. Is the part number stamped in your frame clear enough to read? Just in front of the rear bumper, drivers side exterior. John

Please check out this thread. Is this the same number as your car?

64 442 frame
thanks, john, my 64 442 rusty frame is long gone. looks like i will be in the market for a 64-65 cutlass 3 or 4 speed frame or a 65 442 auto frame and weld the Z bar on. I would have purchased your 65 but would prefer to locate one here closer to texas.
Thanks for your research in this matter. Authenticating a real 64 442 is that much easier as for all those fakes out there. if the 64 frame characteristics are as such ; All of us would appreciate any 64 442 owners feed back / verification on this subject.
Another option i am considering is finding a complete 64 manual shift car like yours if you or anyone else will consider selling.
